What would you say is the most durable AR 15 rifle? Which one could you put through the most amount of torture (sand, dirt, mud, water, cold, etc.) and still have it fire with minimal problems? Looking forward to all responses!

any properly staked and correctly mated ar 15 that has a dust cover and is well maintained is durable.

anything MILSPEC. you can spend more money on a billet upper and lower but Milspec has been through several wars.

Reliable and durable are two different terms. I consider durability to be related to parts malfunction and reliability related to operation. I would venture that NP3 coated internals will be more reliable and resistant to malfunction from dirt and grime. Piston guns may be more reliable when there is a higher round count and fired more rapidly. Against mud and dirt i'm not so sure there is much difference. The gas system may be a factor as the higher the forces driving the bolt and carrier the more likely it will overcome resistance from dirt and crud. Heavier forces on the other hand will reduce durability and hotter gasses inside the receiver could burn of lubricant and cook on contaminants. All this is of course just theoretical.

Recent tests by DOD the current issue M4 won over 10 competitors in tests. No other system showed any advantage over the current issue carbine. Also different bolt systems were evaluated and again, nothing superior was found.
Based on that, I agree that a standard configuration Mil-spec is as good as anything out there. Snake oil is still snake oil.

That story was in a military newsletter I get. Story should be on civilian site somewhere. I was not entirely correct. The Army will be upgrading M4s to the M4A1. That version has been issued for years on a limited basis.

D2wing that was About the BCG PiP.

The stabdard BCG out performed the other 11 BCG submissions.

IMO, Colt doesn't belong on that list. They are only in use by the govt because they are the low bidder...

Colt literally sets the bar. They own the TDP.

And the govt does not simply award to the "low bidder", for anything. They must meet the required specification.

Last test results I found had these results:

M4- 882 jams, 1 jam every 68 rounds, again using heavy lubrication. In addition all 10 of the M4 barrels needed to be replaced, and a number of their parts were replaced during the test.

HK416- 233 jams, 1 jam every 257 rounds, 3.77x more reliable than the M4.

SCAR (556)- 226 jams, 1 jam every 265 rounds, 3.85x more reliable than the M4

XM8- 127 jams, I jam every 472 rounds, 6.95x more reliable than the M4.

Not for the last few decades.

Of course... but the others on that list make vastly better stuff that they can't make for anywhere near the bid price. Have you ever compared a Noveske, Daniels or LWRC side by side with a Colt? There's simply no comparison.

In terms of the M4, as supplied to our armed forces, yes, Colt literally sets the bar, to this day.

If you consider that the AR15 is a semi automatic/16" barrel (and thus civilian legal) version of the M4, then Colt does quite literally set the bar.

Can you quantify what is "vastly better" about Daniel Defense than Colt?
