Have you ever thought: "I don't understand why this isn't a popular caliber," or "how come everyone doesn't LOVE this round?"....? lol Well I myself have one of those.

I know you guys know by now I love Mausers, but common the 8mm Mauser has excellent properties from velocity / gr. size ratio, to cheapness and availability. You can buy this stuff in cases and cases and have months of ammunition for just a measily 100 dollars. I just don't get it! Comparable in energy to .30-06 and look where that caliber has gone. :banghead: Hehehe ok your turn, what's your most underappreciated caliber?

Yeah i'd say both the 6.5 Swede and the 7.92 Mauser (8mm) as well. Mostly the Mauser though, I have a Kar98 chambered for it and even with really cheap milsurp I can get decent 5 inch groups at 100yds. I wish they chambered Model 700s in 8mm Mauser, or do they?

I would probably have a rifle in 6.5 Swede if the ammo wasn't so [relatively] expensive.

I agree

I have both, and I love the swede. My 1938 turk mauser has a turned down bolt, lowered safety and d&t with scope. It is one of my best shooting guns when handloaded. It will do .5 inch groups at 100 yards. I am getting 3000 fps with my sierra 150's out of my 8 mm without any signs of being on the high side.

6.5x55 Swedish and 7mm Mauser are both excellent calibers that are generally underappreciated and passed over for more "modern" SuperSillyShortMagnum cartridges.

I've always been interested in the .338-06 round. It seems to have great capabilities, but it never truly caught on.

Hmm. I can think of some...

8mm Mauser- I see the value in it, although .30-06 supercedes it in this country as a sporting round.

.303 British- Its detractors claim those who like the round do because they like the rifle it chambers. I say neither the rifle or its ammo are anything to sneeze at.

.30-30 Winchester- It's another old reliable round that won't die, but it's still way under appreciated... probably killed more deer and everything else than any one other cartridge, yet for some reason some people like to talk about how anemic they think it is because it's old and isn't the latestgreatestwhizbangtacticoolremchesteraraksniperassaultfullautowhatever round. But from reading some of these boards, most of the .30-30's detractors aren't older deer hunters either. But then, I'm 32 and grew up seeing what it'll do.

.44 Special- I think everybody thinks yagotta have a magnum, but for most of what I do with a .44, I'm just as happy shooting specials.

i wish 41 mag was more available. i would love to try a 41mag for deer hunting but i just can't bring myself to buy a gun that almost no factory ammo is available for. silly i know, especially because i reload. but it just makes me nervous for some silly reason :(

You pretty much posted exactly what I was going to post.

The 260 Rem. It is very similar to the 6.5 Sweede and probably the most well rounded white tail cartridge ever developed. Plenty of power, not too much recoil, and a short case. The 6.5 bullets seem to have the right balance for weight to diameter to get better than expected results. Really hard to beat. Too bad Big Green never pushed it and have very few rifles chambered for it. What a shame.

I'd have to put 454 Casull in the list. It is just me or shouldn't 454 be the ideal lever gun round for a guide length gun. As much power and penetration (if not more) as the trapdoor 45-70 loads out of a 16" barrel but you can fit twice as many in the magazine.

Three votes for the .358 Winchester. And also the .300 H&H Mag. For being a 30 caliber magnum that has the performance of a .300 Win. Mag the recoil is excellent (at least it is on my sako magnum mauser).
