Mountain Lion Attacks

I haven'y kept up with harvest re
I read this on "Outdoor News" this morning:

"Mountain lion attacks are rare in Colorado, where their population is strong – 16 people have been injured and three killed by mountain lions in the state since 1990."

I wouldn't call 16 people injured and 3 killed "rare." I guess maybe it's rare if it doesn't happen to you.

I don't know if I call it rare but we do have mountain lion season here in Co and last year they took almost 500 lions. Whole state is divide into game units and unit I hunt elk/deer has 12 lion tags. Unit I live in for lion tag it include 2 other unit for total of 7 lion tags. I live 7700ft.

Back in 2017 I was making my final trip to pack out an elk in the Sangre de Cristos in southern Colorado. Pitch black around midnight, I hear a purr in the trees above me. I never saw the cat, but it sent chills down my spine. I know that mountain lion are the largest cat that can still purr or meow like a house cat. Walking out covered in the smell of elk blood with an 80lb pack was not very comforting. Rifle was left in the truck, so I kept my knife clenched and ready if needed. Never saw anything and made it out fine.

A friend of mine was stationed in cali with the USMC. Marines who lived in base housing were advised not to allow children to play outside (even with a fenced yard) due to these things.

Interesting, I lived on base housing iin California when I was a kid back when my Dad was in Vietnam. I use to roam the hills and country side all the time. Place was full of Jack Rabbits, Deer, and loaded with Coyotes. I remember seeing Mountain lion tracks and hearing one "scream" frequently. Never any attacks, but we did have Coyotes that would come in to the housing area, and a few attacks on dogs.

Cats are wicked quick and agile. I once tried to rescue a kitten that upon later reflection must have been feral, from a dumpster once. I had a small ball of fur that I could not get off my hand. I have owned a few housecats in my life. Killed 3 or 4 bobcats varmint hunting with a .22 magnum, which does the job, but not fast enough to suit me, but I could not imagine taking on a grown mountain lion with my bare hands. I even refused to shoot the only one I have ever seen in the wild because all I had was that .22 magnum and did not want to deal with a not dead yet mountain lion.
