Hey yall,

Last weekend I picked up a flat top AR upper for hunting. I want to scope it but I know that risers are needed to do so. My question is, what height risers do I need to buy to put the scope up to where it needs to be? I was thinking of getting one of the YHM rails but don't know if I should go with the 1/2 inch or 1 inch risers. I would be using low scope mounts and a Tasco Varminter 6-24x42 scope. If yall need a picture of it to get an idea just let me know.

Thanks yall

While the risers do raise the scope up, they are generally used to move the scope forward for a better sight picture. You can see two of mine here: http://www.pixagogo.com/0961684563 Click on a pic to make it bigger, the click on Original at the top to blow that up. I could get the right height with rings, but the scope would have been too far back.

If this is your first flat top, be warned that getting the scope as low as possible is not always the best way to go. Getting a comfortable cheek weld could become impossible. I usually run a 5/8" riser with high warne rings. If I need a cantilever setup, I use the YHM 5/8" tall and 5" long extension riser. If my rig doesn't need a riser for purposes of getting proper eye relief, I just use warne ultra high rings.

You can take a look at warne's website. They list the heights of their rings to give you an idea of what the differences are.

In any case, I'd go with the shorter riser and set height using the rings. The taller riser could get in the way when trying to mount a scope with a big objective, depending on the mounting length of the scope.

This is my first flat top. I was just asking because I've read before that you kind of want your scope to be about the same height as what the normal iron sights would be for the proper cheek weld.

Edit to add: After checking with one of the old Tasco Varmint scopes that I have laying around I see what yall are saying about having to move the scope foward.

Also, is this what I need to raise the scope and move it foward?

Before I went to Larue and ADM mounts, I used the second one that you linked to from Yankee Hill. It allows a lot of adjustment to get the right position for eye relief. It is VERY sturdy. That and a set of high rings should get you where you want to be.

I used one of these setups on the monstrosity on the top.

The rings I used were just cheap rings. I have since started using Warne permanent mount steel rings. At $30 a set they are hard to beat.

I used an ADM (American Defense) mount on this rig. These can be had for around $150, if you shop around.

^ +1, I've been very happy with the P.E.P.R and the price is right compared to the more tacticool offerings. They give 1" of lift which seems to be a good height for proper cheek weld and move it forward so you don't have to put your rings all the way out to the front of the receiver.
The only downside is the 12 torx screws to loosen when adjusting it, seemed like overkill to me but it's not going anywhere.

That Burris P.E.P.R. looks really nice but I can't see spending $80 on a mount when I can get the YHM mount for around $30 and rings for another $10, well at least at this time. I may go to the Burris P.E.P.R. when funds allow it.
