I've seen a few movies where a shooter unpacks his rifle from a case,
slides in the barrel, then places his scope at a right angle to the rifle and snaps it into place.
Is this movie magic or does this setup exist? How does this affect accuracy and repeatability.

H&K claw mounts are like that and mostly work. What you see in movies is nonsense and those scopes would have to be re-zeroed. The best one is when they do the 'through the scope' shot at 500 yards and the target is clearly visible as if it was ten yards away.

In the August issue of GunWorld David Fortier turns an old Mauser into a clone of the one in "Enemy at the Gates". He had an I.O.R. European Quick Detachable System installed. To mount the scope you slide it into the front boss at the angle you describe then rotate it into the rear boss untill it clicks home. He says this set up is similar to a WWII German turret mount. It cost $149.99. There doesn't seem to be a link to the article from their main page.:(

I think leupold makes some. I was considering 2 sets so I could use the same (nice) scope on two different rifles easily. I saw them at the gunshop.
