Hi,
My wife and I, both avid shooters, are thinking of moving to the Spokane, WA area for retirement. I assume getting a ccw permit there would be easy for a resident. I currently have Utah, Florida, Oregon and Nevada non-resident permits.

What are the shooting opportunities there? Are there many indoor or outdoor ranges?

How does it rate as being a "gun-friendly" town?

Check out this website for Spokane gun-related stuff http://www.spokaneguntrader.com/

I moved to Spokane about six months ago, but haven't gotten around to doing any shooting yet. There are a number of indoor ranges around town, the only outdoor ranges that I'm aware of are the Spokane Gun Club up by Nine Mile Falls, & the Spokane Valley Gun Club just outside of Micah. Seems like there are unlimited places out in the woods people go to shoot. There's also a very nice range in Coeur d'Alene, ID. I'm in Spokane Valley & am about equi-distant between SGC & the Cd'A ranges timewise, so will probably end up shooting at both as they both seem to offer competitions I'm interested in.
Something else to consider, Idaho is a Class-3 state, so if you were interested in full auto ownership/shooting you might consider moving to Post Falls or Cd'A, which are both basically in the 'Greater Spokane' area.

Everything Bonza said.

As for being gun friendly. Nothing to worry about. We have the usual share of people that try to force their opinions on everyone, IE: don't tell people you are from Cali, SERIOUSLY :fire::neener: but for the most part no one cares. And the cops will freaking shoot you if they even consider you might be a threat.

One tip, N. Idaho people can't drive and for the most part have no business being on the road, Spokane people drive like idiots, but a controlled idiocy. A fishing pole in the back window will get you dates, and not always with what you would expect.

It's a great area if you are not between the ages of 15 and 30 and single. Raising kids or family it is a fairly nice place.

We have local 3 gun shoots, ISPC, long range, shotgun, lots of stuff.

Why do so many people from California move here?

The first thing you do is drive up home prices, then crash into people at the first sign of snow. The week after that you will be voting for the same socialist crap and politicians that ruined your state.

Welcome to Spokane, we have plenty of California members at the Spokane gun club. You can tell when you meet them, they know everything about guns and a better way of doing everything,,hahahaha.

If it helps, in my experience, AZ, NV, CO, and to a lesser extent UT all have the same problem. So does OR, but you don't notice as much because they're all damn dirty hippies in OR too... :neener:

Hey hey hey now! Don't start assuming all people from California are commies. I bring my conservo-libertarian votes with me everywhere I go. But the first thing I did when moved to Boise was change my license plates. (but there are a lot of got dang hippies in CA and I feel sorry for the states that these people destroy).

If you end up in Spokane, Cour de Alene isn't too far away and like others have said ID is extremely gun friendly. WA is also pretty gun friendly but I think their laws are kind of restrictive in some things. I'm not up to snuff on their laws but anything is better than CA.

I'm not sure what restrictions you're referring to, but as mentioned earlier WA is a shall-issue state for concealed carry & also allows open carry. I believe if you are a Resident Alien (Green Card holder) WA requires that you have an Alien Firearms License to either own, use, or posess, which I find ridiculous, but at least they are issuing them again. Another strange law in WA is that you can own a silencer, but cannot attach it to a firearm. There are gun-friendlier states than WA, but I think we have it pretty good here.
By the way, I almost moved to Boise last year & I'm sure I would have been very happy living there as far as my shooting activities are concerned. My wife & I spent a few days getting acquainted with the city & there are a lot of places to shoot competitively & recreationally in & around the Boise area, plus there are a number of decent gun stores.

WA is less gun unfriendly than CA, but is no way a shooter's paradice. MG's, SBR and SBS are banned unless they were registered in the state before 1994 or unless you have an FFL/SOT. I have been able to get sheriff sign-offs on the form 1's for silencers that I make, but using them is a gross misdemeanor that is sometimes enforced.

Welcome to the free world!

There is no residency requirement or training requirement for the WA CPL. Go to your local LEO agency in the county where you will be moving to, fill out the application there on the spot (no references, no doctor sign-offs, none of that crap - no photo either), give your fingerprints and $55 and in less than 30 days (or 60 days for non-resident) you get your CPL.

Without the CPL (or a recognized out-of-state CPL), you can still open carry. Without the CPL you do have to unload the gun when in a vehicle (magazines are no problem, only the gun has to be unloaded). Obviously, inside or outside the vehicle without a CPL the gun cannot be concealed on the person whether or not it is loaded.

There is a 5 day wait for handgun purchases if you do not possess a CPL and there is WA State Department of Licensing registration of handguns purchased from FFLs in WA via their required Pistol Transfer Form. Private sale/gifts of handguns can be voluntarily registered with the DOL if desired :barf:.

Go to the Washington forum on www.opencarry.org and stickied at the top you will find a pamphlet that you can download which pretty much explains all the firearms laws.

Also, WA has very strong state preemption, so except in very limited circumstances having to do with city owned stadiums and convention centers, cities and counties cannot enact their own ordinances that are more restrictive than state law.

I used to live near Spokane and was a member of the Spokane Rifle Club for a few years back in the 1990s. The club has been around since the 1930s and has several ranges, both indoor and outdoor.

The left side of the state is infested with those damned dirty hippies, just like Oregon. They passed laws restricting class III weapons in the 90's as part of the Clinton Gun Grab program.

Currently, you can own a silencer but it is illegal to attach it to a gun and shoot it. No SBR's and no full auto unless it was grandfathered. CCW's are not really a problem.

There is of course the Spokane Rifle Club, which has been around in some form since 1913.(I used to be on the board and got all the uninteresting tidbits) They have a very nice indoor range, 25 yd pistol, 100 and 200 yd rifle lines, The Spokane Gun Club (shotgun shooting in the east valley), There is shooting south of town at Mica. I think Joel wants five bucks and avoids membership. They used to have a club but it's president made a living stealing dues for his own use. Over in Idaho there is a club above Fernan Lake and the Coeur d'Alene Rifle Club. The CDA club is inexpensive and has an indoor range for 22 caliber only.

There are two commerical indoor ranges, Sharp Shooting in Spokane and Center Target Sports in Post Falls. Both have an array of matches and stores with plenty of overpriced stuff. They have some IDPA stuff and Glock matches.

As far as the distain for california socialists and the like. They move here, all of them complaining about how bad life and government is cali is. Then they all start demanding california government.

We have a california commie who moved in by Farragaut state park and sued them to close their ranges(which have been there since WWII). He claims the, "bullets whiz by his house", which is nearly two miles from the range. So him and the califags sue and sue. To no one's suprise he has recently revealed he is trying to develope a large tract of land for other califags and the rifle range may drive them away.

In Spokane, we had some socialists move to town riding the Obama wave and they tried to use ballot measures to force the city ro provide FREE medical insurance, some sort of "job" and housing to all who wanted it. That failed and they vowed to try again and again until they find a way to give worthless parasites the quality of life the would have if they stopped smoking weed and got jobs.

There is of course the anti-hunting movement that came up from california. Banning trapping, banning hunting with dogs, banning lead bullets to save of all things the california condor. (nevermind it does not live in Washington state), banning assault rifles and after the police shootings in Tacoma a renewed desire to ban hi-cap magazines and polymer pistols(nevermind the one shooter used a revolver).

A couple of years ago, I was looking at a 29 acre tract west of town, it had one cali neighbor who actually owned property nearly a mile away. He stopped me as I was walking down the road and told me of his plans to sue me if I tried to hunt or shoot on my own property, just like he did the farmers near him. Apparently, enjoying your property effects his "quality of life". He was despised by his neighbors and even mentioning his name in a favorable light would end a conversation. I bought my piece of the dirt elsewhere. He was pestering a neighbor whose family owns over 5000 acres of farm and ranch land because he didn't like cows and he bought 40 acres next to him.

Fifteen years ago you could write a conservative letter to the editor in the local paper. They went hard left several years ago and post almost nothing but the party line. They supported a winter pistol league for sixty years and a winter trap league for 75 years, when they went left they refused to publish the scores in their Sunday sporting section. When questioned they said their "readers" did not like seeing gun related articles that put guns in a positive light. It also offended them that there were dozens of teams all over the west and that they got FREE advertizing and name recoginition all over the west. This from a guy named Chris Peck who was their editor. He is one of those "pro-gun if it is a shotgun" guys. I have not bought a paper in years and have no plans to buy one til it is their final edition.

Nothing personal, but there have not been a lot of positives in the migration from the socialist south to the northwest. A recent trip to Missoula MT was an eye opener, it has moved from cowboys and ranchers to dreadlock hippies and gay couples. You can't put a boat in CDA lake these days it is so crowded and everywhere they move they start bitching about hunting, shooting and sue any nearby range.

If you are coming up, welcome to here. If folks are not glad to see you don't be suprised. Others have come before you and made a bad impression that sticks. Starting a conversation with a statement on how much better it was in cali might end interest in what you have to say quickly. You might want to hurry and get here before the snow flies. If you move up here in the winter, it may take a few days for the sun to shine, thats not "global warming" up here we call it "winter time". There is plenty of competitive shooting around, now that you are retired you can enjoy as much of it as you can stand.

Wow lonegunman, that was quite an interesting read. I'm sorry about all the migrant Californians, the leftists that leave really sour the image of the dwindling right wingers still there and its too bad they have a negative impact on the conservatives fleeing the state. I always recommend my parents or friends coming up to visit me to make sure they have an NRA sticker, rodeo/western style sticker and maybe even another sticker or license plate frame with some kind of thing like fishing to help say, "not here to ruin your state" kind of thing.

Of course, when I moved I didn't really receive any flak for my CA plates but I have heard horror stories from other people. When driving through NV I was pulled over by the Highway Patrol and they let me off with a warning seeing that I was a respectful clean cut kid and when asked where I was going, "Up to Idaho, the hell away from California."

just to clear up one thing, it is perfectly legal to attach a suppressor to a firearm, we cannot discharge that firearm with it attached.

Also, we can't bait bear but we can bait deer

The Ingrown, I mean Inland Empire is a good place to retire. Also a great place to raise your family.
If coming from a sunny climate I suggest you look for good southern exposure in any purchase. Best Wishes!:)

Spokane is a good sort of place to live. My family and I have been here just over a year, and we like it WAY better than the west side.

If you look, there are a few places to go shooting out in the woods (not as many as where I grew up in Northern California), and the hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor opportunities in the Spokane area and the Idaho panhandle are excellent.
