JACKSON - Thanks to the South Mississippi state House delegation, Gov. Haley Barbour is now packing a Colt .45.
In thanks for his work before, during and after Katrina, the delegation presented Barbour with a limited edition "Mississippi" gold engraved Colt Model 1911 semiautomatic in .45 caliber. Only 200 of the Mississippi guns, which have an engraving of the state coat of arms, were made in the early 1980s. At least two were destroyed by Katrina.
The gift was the idea of Rep. Danny Guice, R-Ocean Springs. He got the delegation together and secured the gun from a friend who is a collector on the Coast.
Guice thanked Barbour, who was flanked by the entire delegation, before presenting the gun.
"I honestly believe it was divine providence you were elected governor when you were," Guice said. "The good Lord made sure we had the right man at the right time in the right place."
Barbour, who has been wrangling with legislators as they attempt to set a budget this week, joked, "I may use this some time," after receiving the handgun.
Barbour continued: "I never in my life felt more like I had to get things done (than after Katrina). And I never before felt like I had so many people behind me."
After a photo op with the gun, Rep. Herb Frierson, R-Poplarville, said, "We need to make sure the (National Rifle Association) gets a copy of this picture."
