Monday the wife called as I was leaving work to tell me there was a racoon in the chicken/duck pen and had killed one of my ducks. She had thrown things at it and yelled with no effect (She just doesn't have it in her to shoot something) He just got comfortable and ate his prize. I told her just to watch him.He stuck around for all most an hour In the mean time I got a couple updates on the way home , he went and got an egg came back to the duck etc. :fire:the mail lady stoped at the drive , he never moved . the neighbor came in, he never moved. (my wife was watching him through binoculars) The second my feet hit the ground he got nervous, as I hit the front door he started up the tree to leave. I picked up a H&R tamer 20 that I changed the stocks on and a box of #3 buckshot on the way through I met him as he reached the bottom of the tree on the outside of the pen :fire: Arrogant little B@#$@#d gave me a "what the hell do you what" look :fire: About 3/10th of a second later he found out what I wanted!!! I was close enough that he caught most of the buckshot in the face. It was a boar coon that weighed about 15lbs and had no tail at all. He won't be back for seconds :D:D

SWEET!!!!! Congrats :D

I've got a few coons and possums in my chicken coop over the last couple years. Whats really fun is nailing one to the wall with a bow, who says you can't hunt with a target model?? ;) now thats sweet revenge ;)

My "farm defense" 870 gets used fairly often. It's accounted for raccoons, possums, porcupines, coyotes and has been brought out but not used in response to black bears and a few two legged threats, one of which was an ostrich that escaped from a neighbouring farm.

That Tamer is a modern, upgraded version of the guns lots of us had behind the door on farms. Oft they rode tractors with us also.

Glad you had a happy ending.....

UH, PJR, what shot size for ostrich?

~faint~

ok gotta ask, whats it take to kill a ostrich and whats the preferred method?

Mine is a H&R in 12g. many a posuim, skunks and coon got a craneal injection of OObuck, turns out lots of thing have a lack of lead in there blood.
And one beaver that just plane kick my dogs butt.

One of my coworkers shot 5 coons out of the same tree with a 10/22 a few nights back while his wife held the light.

yeah a ostritch is a bird but a dang sight bigger then a turkey!! (and meaner too)

5 coons from the same tree? nice!

The one that showed up at our place was well enough behaved but that front talon was a bit unnerving. FWIW, an ostrich looks much bigger without a chain link fence in between.

I didn't have to shoot the ostrich but would have if it went into the horse paddock. To answer Dave's question, what I had in the gun was my standard farm load of #4 buck in the chamber and Brennekes in the tube.

My plan was to fire the #4 buck at the head and put the slugs into the boiler room and hope for the best. I have no idea if this would have worked or not but at least I had a plan. Before that was necessary the owner came by to retrieve his wandering fowl. He was very appreciative and a few weeks later sent over some ostrich steaks. Very tasty. :)

A boar coon can be a tough customer if you catch him wrong.

Years ago, I met one on my porch and he backed me into my house. :what:

I did not push the issue as I wasn't armed at the time and he eventually left.:)

Im 20 years old and ive been carrying for almost 6 months now, I carry two handguns, a Glock 36, and a 22 Ruger and i used the 22 for the first time yesterday to eliminate the opposum threat im my grandmas yard hahah, hooah!

Ok. This is off topic, but this past spring, I was on my way to work when an Emu ran across the road in front of me. Until you see a five foot tall bird you just can't imagine how big they are. It had obviously escaped from someone's farm.

Later it hit me that spring turkey season was open. I had this vision of some poor guy seeing this five foot tall, what? 100? 200? pound bird in the woods as he's calling. :what:

Then I picture him back at the truck telling his buddy..."We need bigger guns...we need bigger guns." :D

I never did hear if they caught that thing or not.

What an arrogant little sob, he really had it coming. I'm glad to hear you got home in time. I have a neighbor who's chicken coup was raided by a feral dog, it killed every chicken and only ate one. Unfortunately he missed and the thing got away.

It's also interesting how animals have a sixth sense for intent. They know who's actually a threat.
