Greetings,

Well, here I am practicing my dry fire drills last night when, just for kicks, I field strip the gun. I had recently found a couple of sights that give instructions as to how to totally detail strip the 1911. I've heard it said that this is one of the few guns that needs no tools to totally break it down. So, here I am with the gun at basic field strip level, and I think to myself, screw it, let me give it a try. My wife is kind of looking at me like, do you know what you are doing? Are you going to be able to put that back together? I answer her, I don't know on both occassions. Had to pop the internet on to check how the sear and disconnector fit together, but other than that, it wasn't hard at all. Mr. J M Browning was one f***ing genius in how he put this thing together. So, now that I have actually done this, now I'm thinking of playing Mr. Gunsmith. I'm sure there are a lot of little secrets that one needs to know for this pistol. Any idea of where to find some excellent resource material on learning the finer points of really making one of these a shooter?

Thanks for your time,
Ken

Cool

Thats really cool I need to try it soon with my Kimber...care to share some of those refrence sites you used?

swallent,

You are absolutely correct sir. Bad courtesy on my part.

Anyway, here are sites that helped me.

m1911.org
This site has some great animations of how the insides work. Has really great animations on the trigger mechanism.

1911 Forum
Great forum site, specifically for the 1911.

USGI 1911
This gentleman has put together a wealth of 1911 info, including a great step by step, with pictures, disassembly/assembly procedure for detail stripping.

Hope this helps.

Ken

Yeah, but were there any parts left over when you were done? :neener:

I always have parts left over from Colt Series 80s, Para Ordnances, and Kiber Series IIs.... but its a good thing!

firing pin safetys... :barf:

If you carry it for SD, I think there's very little that should be done to it. Depending on what version you have some may already be done. Ramped, throated, lowered port, polish back of trigger & front of disconnector, an extended ejector and better sights. Possibly grips and a whole lot of ammo.
JMB was a genius so that's all it really needs, IMO.

Unless you're wanting a race gun in which case I defer you to more knowledgable posters than I.
