My First Cracked Case!

No, not from my reloads. Found this in a batch of range brass I cleaned and tumbled. A little surprised to find it. This is a 40S&W, so probably fairly common. Pretty hard to miss this crack. I'm sure this will just be one of many, but your first one is always special!

Sometimes I think they crack after resizing and expanding as well. A big indicator is when the bullet goes into the case VERY easy. Sucks because now you have a junk case primed.

Maybe it came that way new... WW headstamp?

Just another reason to roll yer own, and the case you have looks more like a drawing problem, not from repeated use IMO.

Yep, that's a split case. Toss it in the scrap box to sell later.

Which does cause cracking while expanding.

All innuendos aside, I find a split case or two per couple thousand pieces of brass I sort. Some of that brass has been loaded upwards of ten times, so it isn't really a big deal. It DOES piss me off to realize it's split AFTER it's primed.

Cracked cases and tumble cleaning media rejuvinator.

Talking about cracked cases, reminds me of some 30-06 ammo that I reloaded for my Garand, several years ago & never got around to shooting.
When I tried to load them up in the M1 clip, a few months ago, I found that virtually all the case necks had cracked. These were first time reloads of the cases. I went through my stock of -06 ammo & found about 60 more just like these all loaded at the same time. All loaded with Sierra 168 HPBT Matchkings, all with cracked necks or necks that would crack if you pushed sideways on the bullet. Checked my records & realized that the cases had all been tumbled in my Lyman tumbler at the end of the media's life. I had "rejuvinated" the media with metal polish that had AMMONIA in it. Right away, it had no affect. several years later & brittle brass was cracking.
Something to remember for the future my friends, never use metal polish that has ammonia in it.

I've found cracked cases (22-250) in NEW, unfired Factory brass...
