Congratulations on a short journey! My journey has been longer, from 1984 to date, with more numerous weapons, and there has been quite a bit of returning to the same point. I am reasonably certain my SP101 revolvers will remain my most constant companions for the rest of my life. The oldest one I currently own dates from being purchased in 1997 or 1998, though I had tried one or two in the early 1990s.
To keep this from being a book, I will omit the period from 1984 to early 1997.
Since 1997-98, several candidates have tried to usurp the SP101. I tried to carry 1911 pistols 24/7 from '97 to '02, during which time I toted a 1911 in the duty rig, but the SP101 remained an on-the-clock back-up, even when it was left at home as I dressed around a 1911 off the clock.
When I used a G22 as a duty pistol, from 2002-2004, the SP101 stayed with me, and I acquired a second one. I dabbled, briefly, with carrying various Glocks concealed, most notably the G27 and G29.
I switched to the wonderful P229 as a duty pistol in 2004, but didn't own a decent concealment holster for it until 2007, as revolvers became my constant companions. An SP101 remained the on-the-clock back-up gun, and off the clock, I usually toted multiple revolvers, either two SP101 snubbies, or one SP101 and a larger GP100 or Speed Six.
Since acquiring good concealment leather for the P229, plus a more-concealable SAS version of the P229, I do not always have an SP101 on my person off the clock, but I quite often do, and while in uniform, it is still an SP101 acting as back-up.
I recently added yet another SP101, with a 3.06" barrel, which has become my near-constant off-the-clock companion, often accompanied by one of the older, snubbier ones. As I near retirement from policin', I favor double-stack autos less and less. Though mandated to carry a double-stack DA auto at work, where I feel their bulk is worth it, I am getting tired of dressing around them off the clock. I acquired a 4" S&W Model 19-5 for times I want the longer barrel option.
Off the clock, when there is less likely to be the "cavalry" coming to my rescue, within minutes, I favor a gun that I can grasp more firmly with my
less-than-long fingers and thumbs. The SP101 factory rubber grip, and the nicely compact Uncle Mike's rubber grips on my Model 19, give me a better grasp.
