My journey to my perfect CCW

Congratulations on a short journey! My journey has been longer, from 1984 to date, with more numerous weapons, and there has been quite a bit of returning to the same point. I am reasonably certain my SP101 revolvers will remain my most constant companions for the rest of my life. The oldest one I currently own dates from being purchased in 1997 or 1998, though I had tried one or two in the early 1990s.

To keep this from being a book, I will omit the period from 1984 to early 1997.

Since 1997-98, several candidates have tried to usurp the SP101. I tried to carry 1911 pistols 24/7 from '97 to '02, during which time I toted a 1911 in the duty rig, but the SP101 remained an on-the-clock back-up, even when it was left at home as I dressed around a 1911 off the clock.

When I used a G22 as a duty pistol, from 2002-2004, the SP101 stayed with me, and I acquired a second one. I dabbled, briefly, with carrying various Glocks concealed, most notably the G27 and G29.

I switched to the wonderful P229 as a duty pistol in 2004, but didn't own a decent concealment holster for it until 2007, as revolvers became my constant companions. An SP101 remained the on-the-clock back-up gun, and off the clock, I usually toted multiple revolvers, either two SP101 snubbies, or one SP101 and a larger GP100 or Speed Six.

Since acquiring good concealment leather for the P229, plus a more-concealable SAS version of the P229, I do not always have an SP101 on my person off the clock, but I quite often do, and while in uniform, it is still an SP101 acting as back-up.

I recently added yet another SP101, with a 3.06" barrel, which has become my near-constant off-the-clock companion, often accompanied by one of the older, snubbier ones. As I near retirement from policin', I favor double-stack autos less and less. Though mandated to carry a double-stack DA auto at work, where I feel their bulk is worth it, I am getting tired of dressing around them off the clock. I acquired a 4" S&W Model 19-5 for times I want the longer barrel option.

Off the clock, when there is less likely to be the "cavalry" coming to my rescue, within minutes, I favor a gun that I can grasp more firmly with my
less-than-long fingers and thumbs. The SP101 factory rubber grip, and the nicely compact Uncle Mike's rubber grips on my Model 19, give me a better grasp.

Let's see.....Taurus PT 24/7 Pro C, Bersa Thunder .380 Del., 'Sig P 6, Kahr CW .40, Kimber BP Pro .45, Taurus UL .22 mag snubby (bug), CZ 75B, Glock 26, 23, Ruger Sec. Six (not sorry at all but not that good for CCW), and todays Springfield XD .40 cal. among several I can't remember. I'll find the right one someday.

HammerheadSSN663: Why not go with a j-frame 327? There's your six shots--and with the proper ammo, better-than-9mmP performance.

My journey over the past decade went something like this, with each of these serving as a carry firearm for some time:

Beretta Cougar
Makarov
Walther PP
Sig P225
Nagant 1895
S&W J frames, various
Glock fo-tay
SP 101
Ruger Sec. Six
Back to J frames
Brief flirtation with a Spanish pistol
Colt Detective Special
Ruger Speed Six
Ruger Security Six, short bbl.

Wow, this is the first time I've ever heard of someone carrying that one!

My "journey" in this order included:

Ruger SP101
Bersa .380
Sig P250
S&W 642
Sig P226 primary, Ruger LCP backup
Sig P238
Sig 1911 C3
S&W 637

I still own four of these guns. The others I traded to get the more expensive ones. I finally settled on the Sig 1911 as my most comfortable larger carry gun and the j-frame 637 as an every-day gun.

My problem is I want to carry all of them. I also have a habit of trying to make full-size duty guns into CCW guns (i.e., the P226). I can make it work, but that isn't what they're made for.

I recently added a couple items to my PM9. CT grip, which increased my accuracy and point shooting ability tremendously and Pearce magazine grip.
I could site and point shoot the Kahr "acceptably", but when I finally had an opportunity to get to the range to "sight-in" the CT I was amazed at how well it shot. The CT was dialed in right out of the box.

I recently got the urge for a CW45. Bud's has them for $371. They review well against the P45 for considerably less.

I hope I never find my perfect CCW...The search has been fun and I'd like it to continue!

Some of them in no particular order. I've carried all of these at some point, don't have them all anymore, and I've owned many others that never got carried. The ones I still have get kind of "rotated" but these days it's mainly the Ruger LCP or S+W 342 in my pocket or a 3913 or 3953 IWB):

Colt Police Positive .38
Beretta .25
KelTec .32
KelTec .380
S+W 640-1 (first year "J-Magnum")
Kahr K40
S+W 37
S+W Model 65 3" bbl
Springfield "Loaded" Gov't Model .45
Springfield "Micro-Compact" 1911 in .45
Beretta "Bobcat" 21a in .22LR
Ruger LCP
S+W 6906
S+W CS9
S+W 3913
S+W 3953

I like the idea of locking into one gun and becoming more and more proficient and familiar with it...I just keep changing my mind on which it should be!
