Well folks,

I finally got a new mini 9mm. This is one pistol in my continual quest for the ultimalte pocket carry/LW back up gun. One that was big enough to serve as a primary when needed to do so. The path lead me to the Kahr PM9.

My initial impressions were favorable. It seems to be built solid enough to handle the 9mm and be comfortable to shoot. All metal work was done nicely and the flat matte stainless slide looked pretty good against the black polymer frame. I think the Kahr folks could have payed a bit more attention to detail on the frame. A small mold mark was evident, much like a those little rubber thingies on a new tire. I took it off with a razor with no problems. The frame iself also looks a good bit thicker than the Glock frame. The mag release is also plastic.

Anyway, here is the first pic.

The above pic gives you a bit of an indication of the size. My hand is average. I wear large size gloves and could possibly wear a medium. Below compared to a dollar bill.

And now compared to a .45 Auto round to give you an idea of the thickness.

Size and Weight.

The size is perfect for a deep cover/lightweight carry gun. Folks who have larger hands could possibly feel a bit uncomfortable with the pinkie hanging off and narrow grip, but to me it feels just fine. As for weight, it feels much lighter than my previous Mk9. I tried it in a pocket holster while wearing a lightweight pair of khakis and had no problems.

Trigger and Sights.

All I can say about the trigger is WOW! Talk about a nice smooth trigger. A definite improvement over the glock trigger. The smooth and relatively wide trigger face may have a lot to do with the feel. You just have to feel the trigger to really appreciate it. The sights are a bar/dot arrangement. These are actually useful and a change from typical mouse gun sights.

This last pic is of the frame rails. The Kahr has a small rear frame rail as well as long front rails on the dustcover. A closer look reveals a slightly "bowed" appearance. To me it looks as though it has something to do with the process of imbedding the metal frame rails into the plastic. To some this may be a bit bothersome, but I believe it to be purely cosmetic. You cannot see this while the slide is on the weapon.

I'll have a range report in the near future. Hopefully I'll also have a chronograph in order to check the velocities.

Great write-up and photos, Red.
That dollar/PM9 photo really puts things into perspective.

Sounds like you're happy with your new purchase! Let us know how well she performs on the range.

While I'll agree with you that the Kahr has a smoother trigger than a Glock, personally, I like the Glock trigger better than the Kahr's because of the Glock's short reset. The Kahr's a true DAO with a much longer reset. I also shoot my Glocks a lot more tha my Kahrs though, so the claim could be made that the Glocks have corrupted me. :D

P3AT

Attached is a pic of the Kel-Tec P3AT and the PM9 from a KTOG thread. The P3AT shoots the less-powerful .380 round.

Great little gun that holds the niche of; a pocket gun that shoots a solid defense caliber, all by itself. If you have any initial problems don't worry about it until you get 2-300 rounds through it. The two Kahrs I own, a PM9 and a MK40, both needed the indicated break in before they became totally reliable.

I have the P9 and the PM9. I use both as pocket guns depending on the "size" of the pants pockets I'm wearing. I've found both to be good shooters, however I like to customize all of my ccw. On the P9 I'm using XS sights "small dot" tritium front and a trijicon rear, with the same front sight I have metro on the rear of the PM9, now I just need to finish both of them in NP3. People who have shot my guns end up putting them on their list of "items to buy." Oh, as a side note, I don't practice "speed" reloads with either pistol. Even though it's metal impregnated, the exterier of the mag release is poly coated and the mags are metal. That little part will wear out with "speed reloading" on a consistant basis, but that is not what it was designed for. Enjoy.:)

Kel-Tec vs PM9

USGuns post of the pics of the Kel-Tec .380 and the Kahr PM9 were interesting; Kel-Tec is a lot smaller in all dimensions.

Anyone own or fire the small Kel-Tec. Is Kel-Tec reliable, durable?

I'm thinking of buying a pocket pistol and liked the photo. The Kel-Tec looks a little flimsy, though. Any opinions ???

I've heard some good reports on the Kel Tec P3AT lately and for the price of one PM9 you could buy two Kel Tecs.

Still I think the verdict is still out as to the durability of the P380. I would love to see someone do a "torture" test on one....well actually I'd love to see one tortured! :D

My only P32 experience left me unimpressed. The mag release fell out during the first magazine through the pistol. I took that as a bad omen. From then on it never really gave me 100 percent reliability..even after the fluff n buff. In all fairness, I never gave Kel Tec the chance to make the problem right, so I don't know what she was fully capable of. Still, she felt a bit flimsy. I don't know how in the world they stuffed a .380 cartridge in that thing!

For me the Kahr just made better sense due to light recoil, good sights and better ammo selection. The extra power in the 9mm platform also made sense to me. Ammo is also inexpensive enough to ensure you practice as much as you should.

I'd venture to say that anywhere you can hide a Kel Tec you can hide a Kahr PM. If you can't you probably shouldn't be sticking a gun there in the first place! ;) :D

I bought a pm9 last week and broke it in with a few hundred rounds. No failures. It looks like this one will actually work, unlike the p40 I tried some time ago and dumped. It looks like they beefed this up compared to the p40 I had. This is a pretty sweet gun so far. I need to get a nice pocket holster now.

I've got both the P3AT and the PM9.
I give high marks to both.
No function problems with the P3AT, and it's at 300+ rounds.

I've got over 800 rounds through the PM9.
On early fail to feed on a jhp round, and one failure when I didn't fully seat the mag.
I was surprised by the initial accuracy of the gun, but since then I've gotten more accurate. :D

Congrats! I think you'll be pleased.
I like a 9mm that you can drop in your pocket.

I have also looked into buying a Kahr PM9, have not yet, but I do have a P3AT and like it a lot.

I have over 600 rounds through it, only problems I have had is the 1st trip to the range an few FTL and a couple of ejection in the forehead.

None since.
