My plan to foil tresspassers...

While I was working a number of years back, I was assisting a friend with a similar problem. (He used to be the US importer of the Meprolight night sights).

I suggested he make up some signs that said:

KEEP OUT !
Area QUARENTINED due
to Liquidambar Styraciflua Infestation!

It really worked.
By the way, thats the scientific name for "Sweet Gum" trees!.
But, it really looks and sounds bad and most poachers/tresspassers don't know Latin.

LOL. Thats pretty good.

Rembrandt, what state do you live in? It's a crying shame that personal property rights are taken so lightly. In Texas, it is a Class C Felony (Felony, as in LOSE ALL YOUR FIREARMS) to trespass with a firearm. In addition to that, and I learned this when I took my first Concealed Handgun Course, general trespassing on Texas is a big No-No. Our state laws give property owners huge rights when it comes to protecting their property or even the property of others as can be seen here:
SUBCHAPTER D. PROTECTION OF PROPERTY § 9.41

So, had RIATAC45 lived in Texas when he shot the trespasser in the butt, he likely would never have even wound up in court. Here's another interesting piece about a fella in Pasadena, TX that took it upon himself to protect his neighbors property. The Joe Horn Shooting Controversy He killed two illegals and was not charged.

i like my brother in laws approach

call the guys get the dogs walk up and say "you hear those dogs? you got 5 mins before i have you arrested for tresspassing"

his land borders a national forest and is clearly marks when his land starts but some marines were shooting on our land once with a FULL AUTO ak we came out i was unarmed but had a shotgun in the truck and my brother in law had his glock on his hip we told them first that "hey guys its private property you gotta leave or you will be arrested the guy pointed his ak at him and he said "that would be the dumbest thing you ever do and also the last, there are 4 guys with rifles alot bigger than yours and dogs a few minutes away, they hear a gun shot and you will not walk away you will be buried right here"

i was about to crap myself but somehow he managed to stay calm and keep a solid face

the last thing he said to those marines was "you ever wonder how big of a whole a .45-70 lever action makes in a human skull?"

there were 3 park rangers and 2 state troopers waiting for them at their car they got busted big time for having an illegal firearms in a national forrest

you dont want to tresspass when we got 75 horses and a number of kids to watch out for

Iowa....where the state DNR endorses party (mob) hunting. A hunting technique that brings out the worst in unethical and law breaking behavior. They're more interested in reaping license revenues than enforcing the broken laws this type of hunting breeds.

Many of the replies posted here are nice rhetoric but not practical....shooting, poisoning, or physical harm would be a sure way to get sued and loose your property to the lawyers. I'd prefer to fight this problem without the risk of loosing my property.

A buddy of mine had a guy using his deer blind and refused to leave it since it was on public land. My buddy was really p*ssed and was talking about doing violence to the jerk's truck and/or body.

I was a chemistry teacher at the time (retired now) and I gave him a small dropper bottle filled with butyric acid. He put a few drops of it into the air intake vents (that little grillwork right in front of the windshield) and the guy got the message and never came back.

Butyric acid smells exactly like concentrated essence of vomit and evaporates very slowly so the smell lasts a LONG time. Every time the guy turned on the heater, air vent, or air conditioner for a month or more later the whole interior would smell like vomit.

It's terrible when antifreeze leaks into a crankcase, ruins a motor. I guess poachers aren't much on vehicle maintenance what with the leaks and loose drain plugs. One day I was sent on an emergency mission, I had to collect the anti-poacher spike strip out of our private road before it collected the UPS man that called and said he was coming. Oops!

Navy, you should know that spike strips are illegal in Virginia.

(a few other states as well)

§ 18.2-147.2. Devices for puncturing motor vehicle tires.

It shall be unlawful for any person to manufacture, distribute, have in his possession or place upon any highway or private property jackrocks which are primarily designed for the purpose of disabling motor vehicles by the puncturing of tires by anyone other than a law-enforcement officer. Any person convicted of unlawful manufacture, distribution, possession or use of such device shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. A law-enforcement officer who is lawfully engaged in the discharge of his duties shall not be subject to the provisions of this section.

Something is seriously, seriously wrong when an individual cannot place "jackrocks" or nails, or nailstrips, etc. on their own property! What is this world coming to?

I tried one of the "phone service" trail cams but my signal strength is very marginal and the pictures rarely got sent so I brought it back (pre-arrainged).

It's a great idea but expensive with the phone service.

Titan,
Yes they are illegal, those things occurred a decade or two ago. I know how the conversation would go where I grew up.

Poacher: That ##%^& put out spike strips and flattened my tires!

Sheriff: What were you doing there?

P: Deer huntin'

S: Did you have permission to hunt there?

P: Didn't see no sign so I opened the gate and went on in.

S: *dials buddy, the game warden* Wait here for a minute with me son.

Poacher knows how that conversation is going to go too. They don't start it.

I was informed of a conversation similar to that around here. Someone nosy goes to check on the new neighbors who are possibly government affiliated, building an airstrip in a really unlikely area. Nosy neighbor is checking the place out from the road by the new places gate. WELL armed fella comes out and tells nosy to leave and not come back. Nosy runs to the Sheriff and tells his tale of woe. Sheriff says, "well, don't go back!"

Sometimes I love living where common sense is still alive.

BTW, said poachers were an annual occurrence because our land actually had deer and their great-great-grandpappy used to own it. They even had a 7mm mag blackpowder rifle or the world's fastest front-stuffer reload. The archery tackle that consisted of one arrow to stick in the hole, etc. They knew all the tricks.

I'm kinda curious about the power supply and transmission distance.

These type of devices have been available for a while now, but how do you get them to work when the cell phone towers aren't within range?

Thanks,

salty

If you find their truck be VERY careful not to spill a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide into their gas tank. It WILL take out the fuel pump, regulator, and ALL of the injectors.:neener:

That's pretty cool. Why don't we have those devices covering our borders? That sign would be good too.

I wouldn't be too afraid of using spike strips as long as you heavily post your property. If the poachers go by all that and pop their tires I am willing to bet they won't say a damn thing. If you really want some fun, put your camera where it can see the spike strips, that way you can catch them in the act of trespassing too.

Tresspassing on one of our places is way down since trespassers on a neighbors place had their new Dodge diesel pickup burn up in a grass fire. Neighbor says he did not start the grass fire.

Years ago back home, trespassing slowed WAY DOWN once word got around that several groups of "hunters" came back to flat tires on their vehicles, had to walk out & hitch a ride, then were charged for the tow fees when they tried to recover their rigs in the local impound yard. One of the rigs was a bit scraped-up, also, 'course when you're driving beef down a narrow, brushy road, beef ain't terribly particular about what they rub against . . .

Thats rough.....

Luckily my hunting unit(Ak 23) is bigger than Indiana in square miles, and I can access all but soime private lands, non bigger than 160 acers....
Theres the Ice as well, and all rivers are public.

Tresspassing and being locked up in private holdings has gotta be a big blow to those who cannot afford to hunt them...Leases?

GOOD 4 U! i hope it works, very well! i hate few things in life, but people who do not respect other peoples property makes my blood boil. everybody (well, almost everybody) has to work hard for what they get. for some lazy sob to just run all over your turf is not right. i do not own but a lot and a house, i hunt on public land, unless i am invited to hunt on someones property.
