I've decided there's no "one" right range bag for me and am now going to try ... three.
What I'm now trying out is below.
From bottom working upward:
(1) Red bag is a Husky 14" rolling tool bag I picked up at the Home Depot. Holds all the stuff my larger shoulder bag used to, but now with more room for handguns & ammo. It will be the bag for longer pistol & rifle trips to the outdoor ranges I belong to. It's new as of today, so hasn't been out yet.
(2) On top of that is a smaller Glock promo bag I picked up for $25 bucks on sale at a LGS. It's got room for gear (few tools, eyes & ears, targets, FAKs, etc), 250 rounds and couple pistols or wheelguns. It's for the quick trips to the indoor range down the street from my house. Have tested it out; it's doing fine. Much more compact and easy to carry than my old big range bag. Toting the big shoulder bag seemed a bit nuts to me.Heck, you only get the lane for an hour if they're busy. Don't how long this particular bag will hold up, but can find a tougher one of about the same size later on if need be.
(3) On the table is my skeet/trap/clays bag. It's a Beretta tourney bag I've had forever and does the job dandy.
I think this may be workable. ...And, yes, I do know I'm really just messing around with different way of organizing the gear. But, WTH, it amuses me, and I do like to be organized and maximize my time (and fun) at the range or club.

That setup should allow you to carry whatever you needed for a good range session. I've been using this large heavy duty CLC tool bag that I purchased from Home Depot 11 or 12 years ago. I use it strictly for handguns. Its been the best range bag/tool bag that I've ever owned, its lasted longer than any range bag too. I went to buy another one a couple of years ago as a back up bag and Home Depot no longer carried it, I did find it at Graingers though.

It has extra large heavy duty zippers and reinforced stitching , large main compartment, two zip out side compartments, pockets at each end that I use for my shooting glasses, and quite a few smaller pockets in the zip out sides. Holds plenty of ammo in the floor of the bag, up to six full sized handguns, targets, tools, two pairs of earmuffs (electronic & standard), and a few cleaning supplies. Has enough carrying capacity for a two person range session. The downside is that loaded up (depending on guns & ammo) it can get heavy and the shoulder strap is needed to lug it around. I sometimes strap it to a bucket dolly with extendable handle similar to the handle on your tool box.

Cool. I have a similar CLC bag I've had for nearly as long. It's got armorer's tools in it. Used to take it if I was helping run a match or shoot with a lot of gunners and we were going to be there all day. Figure if I still need to haul it out every now and then, I could put it on top that Husky and wheel it.
Great minds ... :)

I've got it down to a two-bag system. No need to walk back to the truck.

I still generally need a trip to the vehicle if I'm running rifles. Bench sandbags, spotting scope, target stands, reactive targets, etc. Outdoor ranges where I shoot, it's bring your own targets.
