Just moved up to Manassas, VA and looking for a place to shoot. I know the NRA headquarters is not far off but was wondering what else is close? Any outdoor pistol ranges? Rifle ranges? Skeep/Trap ranges? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I havn't been here, but you can try:

http://www.nvrpa.org/shootingcenter.html
Bull Run Regional Park Public Shooting Center
7700 Bull Run Drive, Centreville
703-830-2344

"Aim at new skills with Learn-To-Shoot sessions at the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's public shooting center at Bull Run Regional Park. For information about group and private lessons, call (703) 830-2344. The center is open year-round for skeet, trap, sporting clays and indoor archery."

Nothing closer to Manassas unless you join the Isaak Walton League in Centreville. Bull Run Shooting Center is shotgun only.

There's Clark Brothers in Warrenton, about 30 minutes or so away. It's free, but you have to buy your ammo there. I usually buy a box and shoot it after I've shot my own ammo. They allow rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

There's Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly. It's handgun and very few rifles only. Ventilation sucks and the lighting is poor.

There are a couple places in Woodbridge, but I've never shot there.

NRA is your best bet for a "public" range.

BTW, a bunch of us are meeting at the NRA range next Wed night. Check out the Northern Va Shoot thread here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=1745336#post1745336

It's very long, don't bother reading the whole thing, just jump in at the end to see what the latest plans are...

'tis the season...

to sweat profusely at ranges where the ruthless, profiteering owners couldn't care less whether or not you live or die of heat stroke while on their range. :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

Rant mode on:

You have GOT to be kidding me. Blue Ridge was EASILY over 100 degrees last Friday. Not a bit of cool air anywhere on the line.

I had a couple of bugs to work out on the sub, so I hit up Shooter's Purgatory in Woodbridge last night ( remember guys? 3 words: Prince William County ). It wasn't as bad as Blue Ridge, but it was over 90.

Double ewe tee eff? With the insane ammunition, memberships and gun prices (in some cases) these establishments charge, shouldn't I be reasonably assured of shooting in some sort of comfort? Ventilation? You mean they actually have moving air?

I once heard a guy ask the counter staff at Blue Ridge :
"Why shouldn't I just shoot at NRA" to which they replied: Do you want to wait a while before you shoot?

The thing is that now the other ranges are starting to have waits now so the choice seems to be

1: Shoot at the state of the art NRA range, and deal with the (bigger) crowds

2: Shoot at one of the inferior ranges and sweat off 10 pounds doing it.

/Rant mode off.

Shooter's Paradise in Woodbridge has better ventilation than Blue Ridge by far. It also has a vastly superior back stop, meaning rifles are ok up to 338. Both allow full auto, S.P. being more flexible. Blue ridge restricts ammo used more severely.

NRA only allows full auto by special appt., but you can shoot up to .460 WM there. They have ventilation, climate control, and range safety officers.

I've logged PLENTY of time at NOVA shooting ranges, and the more I go, the more fond of Clark Brothers I become.

Of the all the ranges in the area, I have tended to gravitate toward the NRA and Clark Brothers; while to say that the NRA Range is anything less than a first class outfit is a blatant lie, it tends to be busy most of the time, and very restrictive (obviously, much is understandable, but there have been a few things, like their ammo sales policy, and a few ROs that rubbed me the wrong way).

The fact the I frequent Clark's when I am in NOVA, even though its about 45 extra minutes out of my way (from Great Falls) says a lot; the atmosphere is very safe, yet still manages to be relaxing (just follow their posted rules), and they ALWAYS have milsurp .303 (big one for me).

Of couse, after tasting freedom here (shooting/plinking on openland), punching paper just doesn't give me the same thrill it used to :(

Centreville IWLA

I've been a member of the Centreville Izaak Walton League for about 15 years now. They have an 100yd outdoor range that is significantly underused. The only problem is that their range geometry (and preconceptions) require a 25yd minimum distance. That's on the outside edge of my handgun range.

The best thing? The year's membership, which also includes access to the skeet/trap range, the archery range, the fishing pond, and of course the rifle/pistol range is only about $120 per year, oh ya and its 15 min from my house.

I was a member there for a year, but I didn't go enough to warrent the cost. You cannot shoot .50, and I don't think you can shoot FA either, but you need to ask the club about that.

Clark Brothers

My wife and I drove up to Clarks Brothers today from Chancelorsville. It's a little bit further to drive than to "The Range" for us, but we wanted to see a new place anyway and being an outdoor range it was cooler. It's a pretty good facility from what little I know about such things. Certainly seemed safe, and clean, and we didn't have to drive down RT. 3.

Don't know if it helps, but you can shoot full auto (pistol cartridges only) at "The Range".
