Wayne County Man Sets Up Plan To Catch Alleged Burglar
Man's Home Had Been Repeatedly Burglarized In Two-Month Period
POSTED: 12:09 p.m. EDT July 31, 2003

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. -- Over a two-month period, a Wayne County man had
his home repeatedly broken into, so he decided it was time to take
matters into his own hands.

Tony Brawley decided to take matters into his own hands after a series
of break-ins at his home. Like clockwork, Tony Brawley leaves for work
the same time every morning, but little did he know someone was watching
him.

"I would find things moved around. Sometimes, the TV would be on --
unfamiliar names on my caller ID," he said.

First, it happened every now and then. Then the break-in progressed to
twice a week and that was when Brawley got fed up.

"I work too hard for me to pay my bills and someone else enjoying the
good life in my house," he said. "I just couldn't take it anymore."

Brawley had a plan. He parked his car in his neighbor's yard to make it
look like he was not at home. Then he went inside. A short time later, a
burglar crept in through his window and Brawley was inside waiting for
him.

"I pointed my gun and him and said, 'Hey, don't move,'" he said. "I
moved him over into the den and told him, 'don't move.'"

The alleged burglar was 20-year-old Patrick Bynum, a neighbor who lived
across the street. Brawley held him at gunpoint until Wayne County
deputies arrived 20 minutes later.

Brawley said he was disappointed in Bynum because he has befriended him
in the past. He hopes his arrest will teach Bynum a lesson.

"If a man don't have anything that he's willing to die for, he has
nothing to live for and I'm going to die for what's mine," he said.

Bynum remains in the Wayne County Jail on an $8,000 secured bond.
Brawley said despite what his neighbor did, he has no hard feelings.
