House Passes School Weapon Bill

The North Dakota House is willing to give school administrators more leeway in dealing with weapons violations. The House approved a bill on the issue today.

It allows school boards to delegate the job of having weapons violation hearings to school principals -- or other administrators.

The administrators would also have some room to reduce penalties -- if the violation was accidental, or the student didn't mean any harm.

Under current law -- an expulsion can be mandatory for a weapons violation.

The new law allows an expulsion of up to a year -- but school administrators have some discretion. If a student brings a gun to school -- the expulsion is still one year. But that can be reduced as well.

Pettibone Representative Duane DeKrey says the change will take situations into account when students have guns in their vehicles during hunting season.

Newburg Representative Bob Hunskor says there shouldn't be a big penalty if a student's mother packs a knife in her daughter's lunch box to use for spreading peanut butter.

House members approved the bill today -- on a vote of 86-6. Now it goes to the Senate for another review.
