I've been shooting the majority of my life but this is my first season deer hunting . I'm in NE KS and am trying to network before next week, If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. I would possibly be willing to pay to hunt if not too much(college student). Thanks in advance.

just my .2 cents

If you are local and have a spot please help them out, all it will take from you will be one sacrificial whitetail and they'll be hooked. the benefit to the hunting heritage and sport would far out weight the cost of one whitetail, i know it can be difficult to let someone you may not know on you r property, but if you have a buddy stand and a place to go, go with, offer advice, and develop a lifelong hunter.

Thanks for the encouraging words revolver. This seems to be the whats holding me back. I've talked to a couple people and when I bring up hunting with them or on their "hunting spot" the subject quickly gets changed(LOL).

I know people are trying to get theirs but I'm wondering how to break into the sport. I thought about going to some farmers doors and asking permission to hunt their land but these days its hard to be trusting of people.

I feel like I need to use my hunting license on something other than coyote and squirrel but I think I'm going to have to hope someone will help me out after they get "get theirs."

It's kind of frustrating, I talk to some of my friends who aren't into hunting and they proceed to tell me how someone invites them every year but they blow it off. I hate doing this whole charity case thing but theres only four days until the season starts and I need to get something together quick.

Friend, 4 days before the season starts is about 300 days behind the 8 ball and 30 days behind scouting them out and learning their patterns.

Contrary to popular belief, there is plenty of deer in the public hunting lands. not knowing where in NE KS you're at, you might start with Melvern Wildlife area near Reading. I drive this area all the time and the deer are there.

It is never to late

Here is a link to Kansas Game and Parks web site. Kansas is doing a big program called walk in hunting. Basically it is free hunting land that hunters are able to use with out getting permission. It is a first come first serve basis.

Anyway. Attached is the link to the map. Also, you can look around the site...pretty cool really.

Hope this helps.

Great! Thanks for the help guys, very much appreciated. I'm going to go to Melvern tomorrow and see if I can't find a spot. This 2nd source sounds promising as well, thanks again. Hopefully I could end this thread with a good pic of my first deer, we'll see.

im from that area and know that there are numerous good places to hunt on public land. melvern has some good areas, stay close to the river-bottoms and creeks. also, checkout the hartford area. (its about 15 miles west of emporia, 10 miles south off of I-35) there is a huge game reserve there, with a ton of public land bordering it. ive seen huge deer taken out of there. good luck. post pics if you get something.
