I got this scope for a good price and I figured I would try it out. It is reputed to be very durable and the SCAR17 platform is noted for being an optics killer.

Anyway I have it in a Bobro cantilever mount and in initially installing it I have questions about where I should put the optic on the rail. Should I favor a clear eye box at 1X, or should I put it where it’s clearest at 8X? Or should those positions be the same?

I feel like I have the scope mounted further forward than most people. I can flip up the rear sight without interference and I feel like I can go even further forward. The scope is as far forward as it can go in the rings.

I figured before I do something dumb I should ask your advice. Stock is set at 3, and my nose is just about touching the hinge and the comb feels good to me. If I go longer the scope looks better but I’m basically off the comb. If I extend the stock to get more LOP it feels wrong.

this thing weighs over 37 oz with mount so I’d rather not move it too far forward. Maybe I’ll get a bipod with wheels and tow it around. LOL

Don’t know. As far as durability the SCAR is known to eat cheaper/lighter optics. So I’m confident that this will hold up. But it is porky for sure. I’m not experienced enough to know if it’s a good fit. I have very limited experience with magnified optics

A friend of mine is trying to bully me into buying his S17, so i spent some time with it, that was all iron sights, and ran comb down. I ran comb down and stock extended with a largish optic mounted about where you have yours (i think the scope was less weight than your 1-8 tho) on another guys s17 for about 50 rounds, but thats the extent of my time using either.

Ive never used that optic, but if there is much shift in eye relief thru the power range id suggest considering primary usage.
If your doing mostly short range, and or fast movement shooting, id set it with probably 4 or 5 being at the ideal focus range, with 1 being good, and 8 being useable.
If longer range slow fire being the primary use than id probably make 8 my ideal and be a little too close on the low end, which ive found easier to deal with than trying to get closer at the top.

If it start getting to front heavy then id probably go looking for a lighter optic, as trying to compensate for either eye relief or balance may leave you wanting for the other.

So far most of the stuff I do is multigun with most of the stuff up close and fast, but with the occasional plate rack at 60 yards and poppers at 100, and then one or two stages with flashers out to 200/300/400+ yards. I’ve been okay with open sights on Garands and 1X red dot on SCAR 16 but the long stuff will probably benefit from some magnification. I guess I’ll favor good clear glass at 1X and hopefully get it to a livable position for 6-8X. Thanks for the help!

Try this, set it at 8x magnification and set the scope on the rifle to achieve a good sight picture with proper eye relief from a normal shooting position

now check eye relief through the magnification range, most scopes are least forgiving at max power and most forgiving at min power

if most of your shooting happens on 1x, and you can’t find a happy spot elsewhere, set eye relief at 1x. You have to shoot the rifle after all

Did a rough sight in today at 18 yards (the limit of the indoor range). New problem: when I focus the rear lens to be sharp on the reticle (all the way at the end of the adjustment) the target is not in focus. It’s better with my glasses off but I can’t shoot competition without eye protection. I guess maybe I could run non prescription lenses but then I wouldn’t be able to see everything else as well... getting old sucks, folks.

You better send that defective...couldn’t help it...was the power ring set too high? At that distance anything beyond 2.5-3x is tough for most scopes to focus on, had the same problem with a Mark AR on a pellet rifle shooting in the basement. Had the same problem tonight with a Nikon after mounting where I inadvertently dialed up 4.5x instead of 1.5x

I think the position looks good where you show it. That is a perfect combo BTW. I had ESS make me shooting glasses with 1.25x correction when I was 63 and didn't wear glasses normally yet. I found I could purchase a high quality impact resistant 1.25 set of glasses (or two) and use them just as well and replace when they get scratched or cloudy in any way. A 1.25 correction really sharpened pistol sights for me and now a days even works well with scopes , with the diopter backed off of course. If you have to back the diopter all the way off I would certainly buy a good large lens set of 1.25 readers and try them ! Nice Rifle and scope BTW

Definitely try focusing at 100ish yards on 8x before assuming it’s the scope. Any magnified scope will be “farsighted” at close range.
