I've got an 9mm FN BHP that I bought new, some time around '88, I think. It was originally a fixed sight gun with the old rounded, non-dovetail front sight. It has the extended, ambidextrous thumb safety like the MkII, but the top of the slide is smooth, without the MkII's rib. It came with checkered wood grips. It's got the "Mfg. in Portugal" markings.

I haven't come across any information about this particular model. Is it some sort of transitional gun between the "classic" and the MkII?

Hello. I suspect that it was as you mention, a transitional gun, in which the classic fixed sight slide was used. FN has been known to do this sort of thing when older parts are in stock that will work with updated variations of their firearms. I have seen several variations that were never cataloged. I would believe that is also possible that someone put the older slide on the newer frame were it not for your stating that the gun was new.

I have not seen the variation you describe and have no inkling as to how many Hi Powers might have been setup this way by FN.

Best.

Thanks for the information. It's been a good gun, accurate and reliable. It was the first gun I bought when I got back into shooting when I moved from Chicago to Cleveland.
