Hey guys I bought a Mosin Nagant about a month ago and took it to the range last weekend and really loved shooting it. I'm going to be honest I'm not the best at shooting open sights on a long gun. My last 15 shots from 50 yards were in a 10in cirlce with 6-7 inside 4 inches. I'm not sure if that would be considered good or not. For Christmas I'm hoping Santa will bring me a nice scope to put on the gun. I understand what is all involved in mounting it but I wouldn't mind more advice on that as well. I have already ordered the ATI scope mount.

As for scopes I'm looking for something in the high power range that I can shoot 100 yard with 90% of the time with the option to go 200-300 yards. I only have one scoped rifle now a .22 Remington 597 with a factory 3-9x scope. I actually like the scope a lot. My friend has this scope http://www.opticsplanet.net/weaver-r...v24-24x42.html on his AR and I can't really seem to ever see out of it perfectly. I guess the eye relief just doesn't work for me.

Here is a few of the scopes I've been looking at. Trying to stay in the $250-under range. Not sure if an illuminated scope is any good or not either. If anyone has any advice or reccomendations I'd love to hear them.

I do know one thing alot of people mention about scopes for Mosins is find one with a long eye relief on it.

What kind of Mosin? If it's a 91/30, the entire rear sight assembly can be removed, and there's a dovetail milled right on top of the barrel. Some good 3/8" scope rings will clamp right onto that, and away you go. Pistol scopes with long eye relief work best, otherwise the scope will interfere with loading and case ejecting.

These are all photos off the 'net. And Google is your friend. http://advancedrifleparts.com/index.html There's lots of info at gunandgame.com, 7.62x54r.net, surplusrifle.com, milsurps.com, just get out there and sniff around.

This is a Leapers mount from Optics Planet, costs about $15.

I put a cheapo NCStar pistol scope on mine.

Oh, to get the rear sight off....

Remove the top handguard, disassembling the action from the stock is even better. Clamp the action in a vise, be sure to protect it with a rag or something.

Gently drive the two pins out that pin the sight assembly to the barrel. Don't mangle them, use the right punch and a small hammer.

The sight base is soldered on, so you'll need to gently heat that base with a small torch, just enough to melt the solder (regular solder, not silver solder). Then tap the base off the barrel with a small hammer and a soft punch, like brass. Tap it forward, towards the front sight.

Clean up the dovetail with a file to get any remaining solder off, and you're done. Do it right and save the parts, and it can all be put back on later to restore the rifle if you wish. This process only took me a few minutes to do, it was very easy. But only the 91/30's have this dovetail, so I hear.

Thanks I do have a 91/30. If you read my post I noted that I have ordered the ATI scope mount which is where you drill into the receiver to mount. It seems to be more secure and also lets me use a regular rifle scope. I guess my post should have been more focused on what scope is better and not so much on the mounting

Receiver mount will require bolt work as well.

Ah yes, thanks for mentioning that! I knew there was a reason most guys went with the scout scope plan, but I couldn't remember why. I "thought" it had to do with loading the rifle and/or brass ejection, but you're right, it's the bolt interfering with the scope and the necessary modifications to cure that.
