A friend's dad is an FFL, and I'm trying to get him to receive a pistol for me from NC. The problem is, he has never done this before and is unsure of the law regarding the transfer of a firearm from another FFL. He says according to Ohio law, an Ohio citizen can only buy or obtain a firearm from Ohio or any of the adjacent states. So he's thinking that he can't receive this gun for me. Help me set him straight! What is the law in this case?

I'm not an FFL.... but that is not true. An FFL can receive a handgun from any state and you can buy it from him if you are of legal age and pass the background check. I've done many tranfers from many states through local FFL's...including Alaska.

I believe he's confusing the rules involving face to face trades when NOT going through an FFL.

I agree with Atticus

I'm not an FFL either but do live in Ohio. As stated I too have done many tranfers from many states through local FFL's, it's a common practice.

He is confusing the rules and he needs to re-read his book on this one.

Ditto.

As long as it is going from an FFL in Wherever to an FFL in Ohio, it is ok. This is a common practice. It happens all the time. I'm going to pick up a pistol shipped from Texas at my FFL in a few days time, for example.

One small correction, Coronach - it doesn't have to be shipped BY an FFL. It's perfectly legal for an unlicensed person to ship firearms, as long as it's being shipped TO an FFL (with the exception of antiques, which doesn't require an FFL at all).

Some states may restrict it, but federally speaking the above applies.
