I recently purchased one of those vangaurds in 300wby. I shot factory brass through the rifle and yesterday neck sized the brass. once i loaded the rounds and placed them in the rifle I noticed the round closed tightly and when I would open the bolt it opened tightly as well. Anyone know what is causing this? Am I going to have to full length resize the cases? Also does anyone know what the overall length needs to be so I can have a clear idea on how deep i need to seat the bullet?

That is pretty common in a new chamber with neck sized cases. The 300 WBY is a hunting round primarily and for hunting you want it to chamber fast, easy and positively. Try full length resizing a few and then make note of the difference and then make your decision as to which procedure you prefer.
Good Shooting!!!!!!!!!!

By neck sizing your not sizing the brass case. They will fit tight but are generally more accurate loads and the brass will last longer. Full Length sizing is the way to go for everything else.

Good advise given to you by the

two posts above but once you start using these cases with medium to low
velocity loads then the cases will take the shape of your chamber and then you will get away with just neck sizing! I do not load my .300 Weatherby to its full potentials and mostly use squib loads and medium power loads. Its good to have the power when needed and for that I have full power loads. Roy Weatherby has prooved that .300 is quite capable of taking even an elephant if need be! I use to work for J.P.Sauer & Sons in Eckernforde where we produced the Mark 5 Weatherby rifles in 1970's, that is when we designed the Colt Sauer rifles with a unique bolt locking system!

trim your cases after you size. i run a 300 wby mk 5. i also and found the necks stretch on sizing.

Dan,
Is it safe to assume that you bought a Vanguard in .300 Wby with nothing other than hunting in mind? If so, full length resize the cases and then make sure they are under the maximum case length specified in the loading manuals. My Dad's Vanguard .300 Wby shoots into an inch at 100 yards with full length sized brass. If you have a problem at the range with an overly tight neck sized case, you simply go home and handle it. It is completely different if you are on a hunting trip and the same thing happens.

The most accurate reloads I know of for all the Weatherby cartridges used brand new unfired ones or full length sized cases with body diameter reduced all the way back to the belt. A new record 1000-yard benchrest 10-shot groups was just made from new .300 Wby. cases.

I'm talking about what long-term accuracy is, not based on what the smallest 5 or 10 shot group of several is. Accuracy one can count on is what the largest group is; it's what one can count on all the time. The tiniest groups only show what accuracy is once in a (great) while.

A friend of mine used to test virtually all of Sierra Bullets' different calibers and weights at their factory in California. He tried neck, partial neck and full length sizing as well as new cases. Best accuracy for belted rounds was with new cases or full length sizing them.
