I am having problems loading the rounds into the magazine tube. When i recieved the gun the shells would not lock into the magazine tube so i worked on the bottom of the bolt welding to re shape it. Sanded it down slowly to ensure it was just right and now it seems to be having so problems. (Its difficult to push shells into the tube but they stay in.

I am really not sure how a model 12 should normally function. When you chamber one round it the next round supposed to come out 1/4 inch and rest on the stop on the bottom of the bolt? Any information would help.

SO, you welded on the bottom of a Model 12 bolt & reshaped it, and it won't feed shells any longer.

And now, you say you are not sure how a Model 12 should normally work?

Mercy! Mercy! Mercy!

I don't have a clue how to offer any advice at all.

Yes i welded the bottom of the bolt and reshaped it. Yes it will allow the shells into the magazine. Yet it will allow a shell to pop out every once in a while.

I have quite a bit of experience fixing weapons just dont have personal experience on the model 12 and some things you just cant learn from a book. Just looking for some guiding light from someone with first hand knowledge.

You might have a bad (or missing) shell cut-off. It's located on the lower left, inside wall of the receiver. I don't have a Model 12 any more, but here's a shot of the cutoff in a Mossberg:

Here 's a description of the operation from an Army technical manual (US Shotguns TM 9-285):
“As the breech bolt starts forward, it cams the carrier up and down rapidly. This movement lifts the shell, resting on the carrier, in line with the bore and the shell is pushed forward by the breech bolt into the chamber of the barrel. The carrier has immediately returned to the lower position and is in readiness to receive another shell. As the breech bolt closes, a camming shoulder in the action slide bar, acting on the shell cut-off, cams it downward, thus releasing a shell from the magazine which is pushed into the receiver by the force of the magazine spring and held by the carrier.
I uploaded the manual and you can download it if you like (.pdf about 21meg):
