I have an old shotgun that was handed down to me. It's a side-by-side, appears to be 12 gauge, and is vaugely English in style. The only markings are the serial number and the words "Elgin Arms Co." Has anyone heard of that company? It doesn't ring a bell with me. Also, is it worth anything?

one 45 Auto:
Elgin Arms Co is a trade name used by Crescent Arms Co on shotguns made for Fred Biffar & Co of Chicago IL in around 1910-1930. Thew were also imported From Belgium by H&D Folsom for Stauss & Schram gun dealers located in Chicago in around 1920-1925.

These guns are termed, by the industry, as "Hardware Guns," made by a major gun Mfg for just about anyone who wanted their name on a shotgun. I am attaching the Crescent and Folsom Story for your Convenience.

A couple things....

NO shotgun built before WWII should be shot before a good smith checks it out. He or she will tell you what ammo is safe.

Hardware shotguns are not worth much in dollar amounts. But, this belonged to your family for a long time.

Even if it's past use, treasure it for the memories...

Dave,

I've never shot it and have no intentions of ever doing so. I keep it simply for sentimental value - a mantlepiece decoration, if you will.

Mine has the 9 point rack mentioned in "The Ugliest Shotgun In Howard County" instead of an SxS, Okie. It's far from naked, IMO.
