Just bought 500 brass cases from Midway, went ahead and got the layman reloading manual on sale for $17, and a .357 brass sizer (whatever you call them).

Now I'm set, at least for .38spls, I had been using CCI 500 primers and W231 powder, they were out at the ammo store, so I have HP38 and Win WSP's.

But I didn't buy CCI 550's on the shelf for the .357 :banghead:, I didn't know the brass would be available this soon.

I don't know what WST primers are. I'm guessing you meant WSP primer.

Unless you're using a hard to ignite Ball Powder like W296/H110, HS-6 and HS-7 magnum primers are not necessary when loading for the .357 Magnum so not to worry. I know all the CORRECT manuals use a magnum primers for anything with a magnum in it's name.

"and a .357 brass sizer (whatever you call them)." That would be a Sizing Die and I'm not sure you really needed to buy a .357 sizing die. "Usually" the .38 Special dies will do both .38 Specials and .357 Magnum cases correctly.

 Oh boy, I think you're right...

My thinking was he listed W231 and CCI primer and thought he was saying he couldn't get either so he bought HP-38 and a Win primer. (fail) :p

(I wonder if the OP knows by buying HP-38 he did buy W231 lol)

Typo on my part :(, WSP for the primers (fixed the typo)

By the sizer, I mean a length gauge and shell holder (I'll blame that on posting before coffee)

Arggh, I was just excited :) about the .357 brass being available.

And yeah, I got the HP38 since it's the same as W231. Though the store owner told me not to mix them just use the same load, and he's a pretty heavy duty reloader.

Wow, I was right, no fail this time!!! :neener:

I'm very happy for you and I understand your excitement! You are going to save some money or at least shoot more for the money considering .357 Magnum ammo is more expansive than .38 Special's...

I was gunna get some of That Brass when i saw yer Post

But decided to go get some .38s Die's and use the couple hundred .38s Brass i have and start loading it as well as the .357 i currently load..

So i just Double my Loading ability for my Henry Rifle and S&W Model 19

ya Baby!!!!

So thanks for the post gonoles_1980... ya got me thinking and got me ta spend some $$$$$$ on TOYS!!!!!:D

So stavman let me get this straight you have 357 mag dies and you just ordered 38 special dies can you explain why  that makes no sense to me because 357 dies can do both calibers

Back to the OP original post. If you are loading 357 Mag with HP 38/W231 you do not need magnum primers. (yes Hodgdon uses it in their data but they do so for consistency on all powders)

That powder will work fine with the regular primers. HP38 is not the greatest for 357 mag but will be fine for pleasant shooting. It is of course one of the best for 38 Special.

So no worries:)

Because its a pain to swap out dies......:p

Now i just swap a turret and in less than 5min i am loading either .38s or .357

Some of us are LAZY and want INSTANT Gratification:D

/\ This. I have two sets of 38/357 dies for the same reason. Unfortunately, I only have a single crimp die.

You realize you do not have to swap out 357 dies for 38 special dies you probally need to readjust as always ymmv

I also have two sets of 38\357 so I just change the turret on my Lee turret. I know , no patience.
