At the SHOT show Colt announced a NEW version of the National Match Gold Cup with S70 mechanism.... model # O5870A1

I've seen a couple on GB for $1,150 to $1,250 and they have all sold "buy it now" within 2-3 days of posting.

The specs on this new model include...

S70 mechanism.... which means no FPB (it no longer implies a collet bushing)

Flat top with serrations (I really like this)

Adjustable Bomar style rear target sight with pony engraved in it

Blued Carbons steal

"hand honed slide" (I'm guessing these are put together in the custom shop)

Wide AL trigger w/ 3 holes and adjustable over travel.

They come with a bushing wrench, so I'm guessing the front bushing is tight.

Different markings

Walnut grips with diamond pattern and medallion.

I really, really want one and think they will do quite well with this model.

As for out of the box triggers. The new Colts I've owned and fondled have very good triggers out of the box. My S80 Commander was 5.5# (keep in mind that this is a carry gun), and with a drop in Wilson honed tool steel sear, it dropped to 4.5#.

At least 8 oz. of that is taking up the S80 mechanism (there is a method for checking the contribution of each component, but I consider it a gunsmith level activity, as you partially assemble the gun in various configs and test the pull of each component.... Brownells publishes the procedure, but fair warning, if you start tweaking your leaf spring leaves you better know what the heck you are doing). I've studied up on it quite a bit and have read both Kuhnhausen shop manuals, and I did tweak mine... very carefully. And now I have a very nice 4# trigger.

I don't think you'll find any factory built mass production gun coming with less than a 4 to 5 lb. trigger for liability reasons. But with the S70 mechanism, a 3 lb. glass rod trigger should be very obtainable.

The original Gold Cup National match had the skeleton frame steel trigger with an adjustable over travel screw, and the mass of that trigger required add'l components (a tiny spring and a reset lever) to ensure that the trigger reset and prevent bouncing (causing a double fire). With the newer guns having AL triggers, I don't think the design requires these parts any longer.

Personally, I'd rather have the new version, than to take my chances on a second hand gun of the original design. Did I mention that I really want one of these O5870A1 Colts... as is really, really!!!
