OoI'm a glock guy but have been looking at hk just to see if they live up to the hype. Right now I am looking at either a used hk usp45 compact with 2 8rd mags and tlr 2 laser for 729 OR a new hk30sk 9mm for 545 Which is the better shooter & better value? I would carry one if it really impressed me but it's hard to beat the functionality and simplicity of the blocks for daily use. Clearly hk has earned their reputation for good reason. Am I right to look at HK as the "Colt" of Germany? Which one of these will hold its value long term?

Thanks

I'm a big HK fan, but to me they're two distinctly different pistols besides just caliber, and size, which is a major consideration, which trigger variant are they??

I lean towards the midsized guns VS the subcompacts. Honestly I think the USPC will hold it's value better, but there's a lot of folks that swear by the SKs (P30 and P2K) for carry guns.

The hk usp is the compact 45 with right hand only decocker. The sk30 has jumped up to 575 ish. I like sub compacts for carry. But I don't need another carry gun really

The problem with buying a used HK, or a new one already in the dealers case is that you have to take whatever trigger variant you get, and with the P30, whether it has or doesn't have a manual safety. I'd like to offer an alternate suggestion. The regular P30 compact length in 9mm is a better range gun for most people than the subcompact "SK". So for range use I'd suggest a new P30 9mm "V1" Light LEM trigger variant. For carry purposes I'd want the P30"S" manual safety option with the "V1" Light LEM trigger variant. I have the P30 "V3" SA/DA trigger variant, and "eventually" I'd like to get a P30S "V1" Light LEM trigger variant.

So the USP is a DA/SA with decocker only??? AKA V3?

USP (V3) SA/DA
DA/SA without “safe” position with control lever (decocking lever only) on the left side of frame. Frame-mounted decocking lever that does not have the “safe” position. This combination only allows the hammer to be lowered from SA position to DA position. It does not provide the “safe” position to prevent the pistol from firing when the trigger is pulled. Trigger pull SA 20N (5 lbs)/DA 50N (11 lbs)

Actually the beauty of getting a used HK is the ability to modify the trigger to what you want.....The standard USP can be converted pretty easily to multiple trigger variants and weights with pretty simple tools and parts available from HK CS.

I'd get the USPc, then convert it to a light LEM, but that's just me, and I'm not a fan of DA/SA when I can have a consistent trigger. Usually a lot of guys like the USPc because with the V1, you can carry it cocked and locked. IF it is a V3 and you wanted to convert it to a V1 for C&L I'm pretty sure it's about 10 minutes worth of work and a $12 or so plate. Just google for HK trigger conversions and you'll find videos galore to take you through it. Pretty simple, I've converted 3 of mine so far. HK Pro Forum also has a bunch of tutorials and threads on how to convert.

The P (P30/P2000) series have what I consider to be an "excessive" reset, like a day long. The USP series isn't so bad.

I'm a big HK fan as well and, only in my opinion, after owing both the USPC and the full size P30 the USP is a little higher quality. The P30s fit my hand much better though and the USPC is not really all that compact compared to many. Your choices are really different pistols in size and the concealability factor. If you don't think you need another carry pistol I wouldn't be looking at the SK.

I owned an SK V3. Although very comfortable, reliable, and accurate, the DA/SA transition is bad. I like DA/SA and own Walthers, Sigs, CZs, Berettas, etc...., but that HK was bad. Today, I own the V1 LEM and it is fantastic. I don't carry my SK, but only because I can't justify that 10-round carry-spot. I have 8 rounds in a thin PPS or 16 in a P99 or G19.

Advice.... No experience with your other choice, but if you go SK, get the LEM. Oh, and install night sights. The luminescents make no sense. If you holster all day, your front sight goes dark...you know..the one you want to be able to see.

The harder I look at hk the more confused I get. I am taking my G30s to the range tomorrow and I plan on seeing if they have any hk rentals.

Basically there are so many options and I am what differences really matter. The range only had usp models to rent so I passed but I did handle one.I like the feel and I like the safety decocker. Seems to be the same as on my fnp 45. Mostly I am looking at deals on buds guns. The guns I mentioned above seem to be the best I could find so far. I'm just looking for a shooter. Something that makes look better than I am... anyone know know what differences between the hk45 and the usp 45 are? So far seems like one is German made with German parts and the hk45 is American assembled with German parts?

Comparing the HK45 VS USP45 is like opening a large can of worms, really is a personal preference sort of thing. They're different pistols and both have a lot going for them. I have a HK45T a friend has a USP, we both prefer our own pistols. He gets 2 extra rounds, I get interchangeable back-straps and a standard rail. Both are very accurate pistols, the 45T has "O" ring, which aids with lock up, the majority of folks won't notice any difference.

Ergonomically I find the HK45 superior, but that's an opinion and you know how that goes......But IF you like the FNP (I think it feels like a 2x4) then you'll like the USP.

IF it means anything the HK45 was the pistol carried by Denzel Washington in "The Book of Eli", and it just doesn't get much cooler than that. Then again "John Wick" uses a compensated P30L..................

IF you're looking for a deal on an HK check out CDNN...............

Chuck summed up the differences well. Either the USP45 or the HK45 would serve you well. I greatly prefer the ergos of the HK45. I owned an FNP45 and while it felt good in the hand, I still see the HK45 as a step up. The downside is that it holds a bit less ammo. But I don't view 10 rounds of 45 as deficient.

If the HK45 had interchangeable side panels like the P30, it would be essentially perfect in my eyes.

I wish I could get one from cdnn, they won't sell guns to us here in ca even if you are allowed to have it. I am wavering between trying get the cheapest hk I can find with enough room in my 1300 budget to squeez in a g19 or just getting a nice hk.

The models you're looking at aren't going to make you look like a better shooter than you are, they aren't that type of guns. I have the USP 45c and it's a tank that makes the 45 feel more like a hot 9mm. The p30(sk) and hk45(c) are more ergonomic and streamlined than the USP(c) and p2000(sk). Go to the Hk website for all the different trigger variants for different models, there's literally tons of them. If you're looking for a shooter I would look into a tactical or elite model USP, those things are sweet and would make you look like a better shooter than you are.

Don't know IF you're allowed to carry or not, but before I'd get "the cheapest HK I could afford and a G19", I'd get a P2000 in 9mm, LEM, change the springs to be a V1 (light LEM) invest the rest of my money in magazines, holster(s), sights, ammo and shoot the chit out of it.

The P2000 is sort of HKs red-headed stepchild, but it really is a great pistol and probably my favorite HK. It's kind of the evolution of the USPc, when they trimmed off all the excess steel and plastic that wasn't needed. Compared to the USPc it actually looks "svelte". About the same size as a G19, so it's concealable, but it's also large enough to shoot all day comfortably in a class. Mine's a .40, that I dropped a 357 Sig barrel into. I carry with 357SIG, but shoot the .40 when there's a chance I won't get my brass back (I reload both calibers). I've put the thin slide stops on mine, Trijicon HDs, and with the flat mag base plate it's actually slightly smaller than a G19.

Just a thought,

Chuck

If you haven't handled them, they are two different sized guns. While both are "compacts", they are compact versions of different sized guns. The USP is a big gun, while the P30 is more compact.

The USPc(ish) is a G19 sized gun, while the P30sk is a G26(ish) sized gun.
