Hello! I grew up shooting un upstate NY, then after college lived in California for several years. Now we bought our own home in central Oregon, a much more gun-friendly state, and now I will be slowly building up the gun collection I've waited for since I was a boy!
Sorry for this next convoluted bit: I was a pro-gun (neo)conservative growing up, and have been a pro-gun liberal since the early 90's. (My divorced parents: anti-gun conservative mom, pro-gun liberal LEO dad). I married a delightful but vehemently anti-gun liberal, who after some experiences this summer* came to better understand guns, gun owners, and the 2nd Amendment.
*This summer, wife and I hiked the entire Continental Divide Trail 3000 miles from the US-Canada border to the US-Mexico border through the Rockies (MT, ID, WY, CO, and NM). The short version is that it was amazing. But regarding my wife and guns -- after seeing how guns were woven into the fabric of everyday life in rural Western America; meeting normal, nice families who owned guns (and after being fed lots of elk and mule deer by friendly hunters we met), my anti-gun wife from California announced one day, out of the blue, that she thought it was ok for me to own guns! I've never needed her permission, but I was not going to do something that she so profoundly objected to. I was floored.
So now, a continent away from Dad and shooter uncles, I will start building my own collection, for range shooting, plinking, home defense, self-defense, potentially hunting (though I enjoy my bow), and preparedness. Fortunately, I stumbled onto THR, and I am enjoying getting up to speed on the past 10 years of firearms news.
Looking forward to making some shooting friends in our new home in central Oregon & building a budget collection, but I have to start selling off some knives, headphones (don't laugh -- you've got some pricey guns, I've got some pricey headphones), camping gear, etc.
Thanks for a great forum!
