(Santa Fe-AP) -- A children’s advocacy group filed suit Monday to block the state’s concealed carry law.
The group, New Mexico Voices for Children, says the law passed by the Legislature this year is unconstitutional.
It allows New Mexicans age 25 and older to be licensed to carry concealed loaded handguns.
The first of the licenses could be issued as of January. The Department of Public Safety is working on regulations.
Voices for Children filed the challenge in the state Supreme Court. It asked the high court to block the department from issuing licenses.
The organization claims that language in the state constitution specifically prohibits the carrying of concealed weapons.
But the law’s supporters say the group is misinterpreting the constitution. They say the law will be upheld.
