You may have read mention of the Spyderco Mule Team initiative. Spyderco has created a functional small fixed blade which they will offer in a variety of steels so that users can compare performance. The knives are offered without scales or sheaths to keep costs down.

The initial offering was in 52100 and sold out extremely quickly (days). The new offering is in CPM M4 and they appear to still be in stock. This is a chance for knife junkies to get a great knife they can easily customize when they have time or funds, and also a great chance for steel junkies to try out a steel at an incredibly low cost.

Hmmmm . . . . this sounds very interesting.

I like Spyderco's products, and have several of their knives. But I don't like a folder for defensive uses; I like I fixed blade.

I'm going to have to get this and try it out. Thanks for the link.

I'm pretty sure they are factory direct only. I haven't seen anyone else selling them in any case.

In my case, I noticed the 2nd was much sharper then the first. I need to put handles on them, but already I prefer the M4 for cutting.

I want to thank JShirley for posting this. I missed out on the last ones, so I made sure I got one this time. It's a very nicely proportioned knife, at least to me.

I'm planning on some 1/8" scales and an IWB Kydex sheath. This would make a great daily carry blade. I'm just trying to decide whether to epoxy and pin the scales or screw them down. I have a piece of carbon fiber that is just screaming to be used, but I'd have to dig out the respirator and vacuum setup if I'm going that route. Decisions, decisions...

Any yes I believe that the Spyderco Factory Outlet is the only way to get them.

This forum is siginifcantly detrimental to my bank account. Any suggestions on places to obtain G10 scale material?

Regards,

U

Guys, it looks like Spyderco still has a few of these left. I'm guessing the economic downturn, combined with the higher cost of the CPM M4, is the reason. At $70, still a bargain.

3rd Mule

Spyderco just released their next Mule (the MT3P). The steel on this model is S90V.

From the Spyderco website:

"CPM S90V is a unique tool steel made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process. It is a martensitic stainless steel to which vanadium and carbon have been added for exceptionally good wear resistance. CPM S90V offers substantial improvements in wear resistance over 440C and D2, and other high chromium steels, with corrosion resistance equal to or better than 440C. CPM S90V’s high vanadium content favors the formation of hard vanadium carbides instead of chromium carbides for wear resistance, leaving more free chromium available to provide corrosion resistance.

The wear and corrosion resistance of CPM S90V make it an excellent candidate to replace 440C, where increased wear is a primary concern. It can replace D2 or other tool steels in applications where improved corrosion resistance is also of benefit."

I will post my impressions when it comes in.

Received the S90V mule yesterday. Right off the bat I noticed it isn't as sharp as the M4. The M4 was hair popping scary sharp out of the box. The S90V is sharp, but not shaving sharp. I didn't have time to strop it and see if that makes a change or not. Maybe I can work on it tonight.

OK, who is making kydex sheaths for these? Any pre-made scales available?

Tom Krein "might" be one to contact.
He posted here awhile back in regard to Mules, sheaths, and handles.
So I don't recall if he was going to offer these for the public, or was just messing around for his personal use.

Being as I am not one to meddle or put anyone on the spot, I would contact Tom via PM.

You could also start a new thread asking and see what replies shake out.
