New parts, old gun

So I picked up a first model dragoon the other day (not a replica) S/N 4xxx, and it was in pretty good condition, except the cylinder wouldn't lock up. I took it apart when I got home, and saw that the head of the bolt was peened down. Now I've got a couple of Uberti Walkers sitting in the safe, so I figured what the heck? Took one apart, took out the bolt and dropped it into the dragoon. Fit like a charm, and the cylinder now locks up real tight . But now I have a Walker that doesn't have a bolt, so, you guessed it, put the dragoon bolt in the Walker. Works just fine . And, no, I'm not going to fire the Walker until I get a new bolt for it.

That reminds me of the ad campaign for underwear that said,
"Nothing goes right if your underwear is too tight." (or too loose either maybe?)
Anyway, they need to be just right!

When you say a non replica,first model dragoon do you mean a actual 1848-1850 Colt?

Yes, actual Colt manufactured in 1848.

Is that a barrel-mounted rear sight? Do the Sn's match, or is that barrel from a conversion? I know some of the Dragoons were set up with an adjustable rear sight, but that doesn't look to be the case here.

You sort of lucked out. In both the original revolver and later replicas the lockwork was (and still is) individually hand fitted, and is generally not considered to be interchangeable between guns. If it works, it works, but don’t really expect it.

Nice Dragoon by the way. Too bad it can’t talk.

All the serial numbers match, except for the loading lever, and as you can see (maybe) the wedge, which is a period replacement. The rear sight is a period add-on which appears on maybe 15-20% of the guns from that era. The cylinder is worn smooth (no engraving visible), but other than that the gun is in very good condition. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether it has been re-finished or not, and I'm having that checked out. As I told the guy I got it from, I either slightly overpaid you, or I stole it from you. He was OK with that.

No, but it looks like I could if I wanted to. On the other hand, if I'm right about it's value I wouldn't even consider it.
