I came across a few articles online about the New Zealand Army adopting a new rifle to replace the Steyr AUG and announcing early in 2015. I was wondering if anyone here might have an idea what they will be going for. I know they bought some SDM rifles from LMT in the last couple of years.

Thank you Ryanxia, I'm happy to be here.

I found some references to them evaluating the SCAR, but those were all from 2010. Meanwhile there is this an article published in the New Zealand Herald from June that claims that they are evaluating a new rifle to replace the AUG. I'm sure they bought some SCARs for their SOF or for evaluations because there are pictures floating around, but not for general issue.

Despite the bad press from civilian reviewers in the US, the ARX seems to be making sales, lately (I think it was Norway or someone the other day who said they'd adopt it?).

Ive actually heard very good things about the rifle from people who actually have used them. It is kind of ugly and the forend looks to short and fat. However Id have to actually get my hands on one to figure that out. I thought the same thing about the SCAR until a shot one.

This all begs the question; why is the ARX so superior to the AUG that it compels a country into changing its main infantry rifle?

Fella's;

To my mind, the big questions is: Are they for the vampire sheep, or the zombie sheep?

As for why they are replacing the Steyr? Obviously they have shot out their barrels at the annual Easter Bunny Hunt.

Since it takes about 10 seconds to swap out AUG barrels they probably have a different reason.

I'd suspect they want to swap to a more modern design because the rifles are pushing 30 years old and are heavy for a 556 NATO rifle.

Plus the AUGs don't have a acre of rails covering every conceivable surface.

I dont think you want to give a Kiwi a gun, least of all a knife.......

I work with these guys, both from New Zealand, both great camera men/producer's........but when they play, they know no boundary's...... ~~LOL!!~~

caribou, you should take your family down under for the annual bunny hunt - ~15,000 taken this year, ~20,000 a few years ago! That's a whole buncha bunnies :eek: Maybe those Kiwis could set up a trip... ;)

What bad press does the ARX have (other than the fact that it's not an AR-15)? The only issues I've heard of are the potentially loose top Picatinny rails, and Beretta quickly resolved this issue.

The ARX's main failing seems to be that it isn't an AR. If I didn't alredy have a SCAR I'd be on one like a politician on campaign contributions.

Im wanting to add a non AR to the cache in the next couple years. My main competitors right now are the Beretta and the Tavor. I got a while to choose though.
