My buddy was at a gun show awhile back, saw a new Ruger 77, in .284, very scarce caliber, that had a "parkerized" looking finish on it, dickered with the guy and bought it. He checked everything from Ruger to find out about this finish, called them and they said the owner must have applied it, they certainly didn't produce one! So, he took some rust remover and removed the parker-type finish, boxed the barrel and action and sent it to Ruger to have it blued. A couple of days after Ruger received it, they called and said it was being polished and ready for bluing, wondered if he wanted the matte finish, or the high polish, which he chose the high polished finish. The next day, Ruger called and asked if he'd send the stock to them, as they didn't make many .284 rifles, they wanted to test fire the rifle and make sure everything was good to go. After they'd received the stock, it was shipped about 3 days later, in a new Ruger box, something the old seller didn't even have. The best part, Ruger didn't even charge him for the polishing and bluing of the rifle, so, he now has a blued, new in the box Ruger .284, better shape than when he bought it! Ruger did a splendid job, stock hasn't a scratch or blemish anywhere on it!

Wow that's awesome. Wonder if they'd do that for a new Hawkeye (even if they charged)?

I'd love to have a gloss finish if I hadn't already bought a matte scope.

JDMorris, its a 7MM cartridge case, to attain .270 performance. This info from my Hornady reloading book.

SGW42, I'd assume they would, a phone call is all that my buddy took to get things rolling in his case, the rifle turned out very, very nice. "Brand new" from the factory, blued and in a new box! I hadn't seen the rifle until he'd gotten it back from Ruger, the stock is very nice wood. I'd shot one a fellow worker had about 20 years ago, this was the first and last 77 I've ever shot. I understand about the matte scope. I just remembered about the price on re-bluing for him, was listed at $180.00, then they called and said no charge, I don't know for certain if the .284 was ever fired before he'd bought it ?! Hope this helps both of you!

.284 is actually a proprietary cartridge....it has a magnum width case, but a rebated rim which is .30-06 size. It isn't belted either.

The .280 Remington however is a .30-03 (parent case to the .30-06) necked down to 7mm
