I finally had a chance to get out to the range with my girlfriend. we went as a celebratory trip for my cousin who is deploying to Iraq on Wednesday with the 81st Armored Brigade out of Ft Lewis WA. He's a Major and volunteered to go for his second tour. he, his wife, the SO and myself all went and had a blast. we started out with pistols where i borrowed my Cousin's P226 to start the GF out on. she's fired pistols before including a G19 and a Mak. she had a great time shooting it though it the grip was a little thick for her smallish hands.
she did great, keeping most of her shots in the 7 ring at 9 meters.
she tried a couple rounds with my USP-Compact .40 but decided that it wasn't her cup of tea after 2 shots. no problem, don't want to scare her off with anything she didn't want to do. we moved on to the Sub 2000 9mm. this is the first time she had ever fired a rifle. i wanted to start her out with the Marlin 60 but all the rifle lanes were full. she picked it up and did great again! after a half dozen shots she didn't keep it tucked into her shoulder and caught a slap on the cheek bone from the steel tube. that was enough for her, but she had a fun regardless.
a couple lanes opened up on the rifle range and we moved over there. i set her up with the Marlin 60 (open sights). she started rattling off rounds on that with big ol' smiles and i knew she was hooked. i didn't get any pics of her with the M60 though. after the next cease fire, i broke out the real hardware and she was excited to shoot the Bushy M4A3 with a red dot, and some other goodies. she has a pretty low recoil tolerance as of yet so i figured this would be the limit of that and it was, but she still knocked out 10 rounds or so with it and she smiled nice and big after each shot. here's her reaction after her first shot.
after another couple rounds, she settled down and looked like a pro!
she had to do a little mugging of course...
she did great!!! after she had her fill, i tried my hand at my EBR. here we go! you can see the brass in mid flight in this one, just above and to the right of the ejection port. she's a good photographer too!!
we went back to the M60 after that since that what she enjoyed the most. while she was shooting that i was sighting i my new Marlin 981T with a cheap-O 3-9 scope. i got it sighted in and it shot great! the SO was having a little trouble picking off the clay pigeons we had set up at 50M and was starting to get a little frustrated. i handed her the 981T so she could pick off the remaining the pigeons and she did just that. it was just the thing to keep her confidence going. she popped the last of the clays as i ran a few rounds the Win '94 to confirm it was still zeroed. it shot great too, of course. i love that gun. here i am at peak recoil. i kept it within 5 inches, standing off hand at 50M after 3 hours of shooting. not too bad. i think i could do better off the bench but the SO was using it. it'll be my go-to rifle for my newly inherited riverfront property in a bear rich region, just in case.
it was a great day! got to shoot with my cousin whom i won't see for a year, got my SO out shooting, got to sight in a new rifle and had a ball just blowing stuff up. what could be better?!
