My first bolt action! I am a complete rifle newbie and picked this up to hog hunt and to accompany my buddy to the rifle range.

This is what I have gathered about the rifle:

- .243 is a good dual purpose varmint/large game
- With a 1:9.25 twist, I should shoot 100gr out of it

The Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster was awesome. Very clear and just as good as my buddy's Nikon Monarch. Took us a whole box of ammo to sight it in (we were being optimistic by not sighting it at 25yrds and jumping to 100).

Just wanted to share!

PS. I forgot to tell every one, I got this thing for a STEAL! The buy included the rifle with the Boydt stock ($100 give or take), generic bipod, the Nikon Buckmaster ($270-$300 retail) with the butler creek flip up covers, sling and case....all for $250. The whole package was worth the scope alone!

Congrats on your first bolt gun. Nice looking setup. 243 is a good dual purpose round.

Beautiful gun. I think laminated stocks look great, and Savages are almost always good shooters.

I have one of the Nikon Buckmasters and I love it. Which BDC do you have?

What kind of groups have you been able to get?

You should be very happy with that gun! I have the synthetic stocked version with a Burris Timberline and can keep my groups around an inch give or take at 100 yards consistently with 100gr Federals.

I'm not sure about "which BDC" I have, I assumed they were all the same... hmm.

Like I said, we took all of 20 rounds to dial it in. On the last round and final adjustments, I hit a half a cm off my point of aim. Hoping to get the range early next week to get a group.

Found an academy with Monarch 100gr brass cased 243 for $14.99. Gonna see it if groups ok.

you need to get a new trigger, and Sellier & Belloit 95gr PTS are the ticket, and yes the scope is awesome

My local walmart had nothing. Called one a few miles north and they only had something for $17.xx and hung up on me before i could ask what brand they were.

I don't see anything wrong with the trigger as is. Again, I am not super experienced, but I just dry fired a few times and the trigger seemed perfect for me, granted I have shot many thousands of rounds through target .22 handguns practicing my trigger control. I'm a don't fix it if it aint broke kinda guy.

going to the range tomorrow, will post pics of groups if theyre worthy...or come back seeking advice if they are not.

That .243 at Walmart for $17 something was probably Winchester soft points. The Walmart I usually check for ammo sells Federal .243 soft points for $13.97 Winchesters for something like $17.97 or something. I can't remember the exact price. I'm not sure on the price of Remington Core Lokts as I have never looked at them. In the Savage .243 I've seen and gotten to shoot it shot about .8" groups with both Federal and Winchester soft points at 100 yards. With Hornady SST's it shot about the same also. With Hornady BTSP's the groups opened up to about 1.5". Reloads it liked shot about .4-.5". That Savage wasn't at all picky with ammo and shot most everything I've seen tried well as you can see. One set of reloads shot about 1.5" groups too which still isn't horrible.

Very nice gun and set-up, caliber as well as deal -- truly awesome.
Enjoy this new venture! I predict lots of smiles...

No picture, but I shot a 1.5 inch group of 5. Three of them low left in a 1.25 group and the last two were both bulleyes hits one on top of each other!

This is my second time firing this rifle and fourth time ever shooting a rifle, so I am pretty happy!

Ammo was the cheapy $14.99 100gr Monarch, the Remginton Core Lokt was very very inconsistent for me.

Congrats!

And also, the screen is quite blurry but that looks a lot like Gabrielle Anwar and Bruce Campbell, watching some Burn Notice eh? Haven't seen most of the seasons past one, but I like it.

make sure you try some federal blue box plain janes. also you can try some vld bullets with that; if you are near houston or other area gunshow, look for some 105 to 110's, they should shoot with that twist. some of the best factory carts right now aremade by these guys, and they are reasonably priced.

even their hunting grade stuff shoots phenominally well...
