Bloomberg ally Fossella cozies up to gun lobby, undermining mayor’s crusade Originally published on April 28, 2006

Mayor Bloomberg, convening a summit of big-city mayors this week to fight the tide of firearms - many of them illegal - that kill more than 30,000 people nationwide every year, did a rare and wonderful thing by speaking bluntly about the link between death, violence and misery on our streets and the politicians who block sensible efforts to stem the illegal guns that flood New York and other cities.

Bloomberg spoke plainly - with an unmistakable touch of bitterness and frustration - about the recent death of David Pacheco, the 2-year-old boy who was shot to death on his way to church Easter morning.

"The only thing that would have helped that child is if we had the courage to stand up and get the guns off the street," Bloomberg told reporters at the conclusion of the gun summit. "And those who vote against getting guns off the street really are the ones as much responsible as the shooter, because if the shooter didn't have a gun, that child would still be alive."

With that statement, Bloomberg broke with politics as usual, where favors, policies and cash get traded. Curbing gun violence, he signaled, will be a battle over values.

That's a welcome change. Up to now, Bloomberg has been playing footsie with pro-gun politicians, knowing full well that the number of horrendous deaths of children in our city would drop if grinning pols, their campaign accounts flush with gun-lobby cash, would stop voting against restrictions on the sale of firearms.

That brings us to the case of Rep. Vito Fossella of Staten Island, who co-chaired Bloomberg's reelection committee last year. Fossella, who has a B-plus rating from the National Rifle Association, along with $9,000 in contributions from the group since 1999, has a long record of battling the reforms Bloomberg now champions.

In 1999, Fossella voted to cut the waiting period for buying weapons at gun shows from three days to one. In 2003 and 2005, he voted for laws making it harder to sue gun manufacturers for the misuse of their products.

Fossella voted to loosen gun restrictions in Washington, which is under congressional control. And he was part of the majority in Congress that let the federal ban on assault weapons lapse, clearing the way for the sale of armor-piercing .50-caliber rifles.

Bloomberg, whose administration is pressing a lawsuit against gunmakers, is fully aware of Fossella's atrocious record. But when Fernando Ferrer, the mayor's Democratic rival last year, brought up the matter during debates, Bloomberg simply pointed out that he disagreed with the Staten Island Republican on some issues.

That was the politics-as-usual approach. Bloomberg needed conservative votes on Staten Island, so he cozied up to Fossella and kept mum about his campaign co-chair's pro-gun votes. It's clear that such shameful compromises simply don't work.

Leaders like Bloomberg have to keep pushing Fossella and other politicians out of their comfort zone and into the hospitals and funeral homes where the body counts keep rising. And the rest of us should help Bloomberg do it. Every time a cop, a child or bystander gets shot with an illegal gun in New York City, a pol like Fossella should get a wave of citizen phone calls and press inquiries, reminding him of his past votes and asking when he'll come to his senses.

Other excursions outside the comfort zone should include protests - complete with a roll call of those killed and injured with illegal guns - outside Fossella's office and/or churches where he is speaking.

Above all, Fossella and other pro-gun politicians need to be pressed to oppose a bill, currently before Congress, that would make it harder for local law-enforcement agencies to share data about the 1.2% of dealers who the federal government estimates sell the weapons used in more than 57% of America's gun crimes.

All of us need to learn what Bloomberg belatedly discovered: We won't get rid of illegal guns by playing nice with the gun lobby and its political marionettes.

That's incredible. Where do you even start? Beyond all the distortions, he actually criticizes this guy for voting for a law "making it more difficult to sue gun manufacturers for the misuse of their products." Usually, these idiots at least try to make it look like the manufacturers are doing something wrong.

There's an easier way to prevent deaths from violence and improve quality of life for New Yorkers all at the same time.

Move out of NYC. If I didn't mind the population explosion, I'd say come here, where children don't fear much of anything, even though we have "shall issue" permits and a gun counter at the local Sportsman's Warehouse five times as long as my car.

uhhh.... aren't AP .50 cals illegal EVERYWHERE? or did i miss something fun? and i thought that it was common knowledge that the '94 ban did nothing to reduce any sort of crime, but what could i possibly know, im just an evil member of the gun lobby.

"The only thing that would have helped that child is if we had the courage to stand up and get the guns off the street," Bloomberg told reporters at the conclusion of the gun summit.

The man is a shameless, wanton liar. The only thing that would help would be to get the criminals off the streets.

But SW, Bloomie and other politicians cannot get rid of all the criminals. If they did that what would the populace live in fear of? What would a lawn order pol run on if there was no crime?

No fear = no votes = no power and prestige = "what, I'm no better than the rest of you?"

Nope, only in certain areas like California and the like.

AP ammo is available in a wide range of rifle calibers. It's specifically banned in handgun cartridges, though.

You can readily buy AP, API, APIT, tracer, and other non-ball ammo in a large number of states.

Well... here's a copy of what I sent him...

"All of us need to learn what Bloomberg belatedly discovered: We won't get rid of illegal guns by playing nice with the gun lobby and its political marionettes."

Define an "illegal gun," please. Then define an "illegal immigrant" for me. I'm curious to see if you're consistent or not.

Try this approach; get the CRIMINALS off the street.

I gather from reading the whole article that you're an idiot. Wait, you're in NY; let me put it in NY-ese... you're a F****** idiot.

My email to the author:

Hello sir, this email is regarding an article you
wrote about a Mr. Fossella. Your article disgusted me
when I read it, surely you couldn't be serious about
this whole "gun control" thing. You should really step
back and take a look at the big picture. You should
really support Crime Control. All gun control does is
result in needless casualties, as it makes it easier
for criminals to obtain weapons. If you dont believe
me, check the FBI Uniform Crime Reports. Here's a link
to the preliminary 2005 reports (they seem to run
about a year behind)

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/2005prelim/2005openpage.htm

In their 2004 reports, you can see a direct
correllation between the Brady Grade (this is a letter
grade given by the Brady campaign to different states)
and violent crime. The states with the lower grades
have lower rates of violent crime, do you understand?

The author's response:

You are wrong. Adjusted for population, people are 6 times more likely
to be killed in Wyoming than in NY (to take one example). And NYC
remains the safest big city in the USA (again, adjusted for population)
while crime in places like Houston, Atlanta and New Orleans are out of
control. There is no factual basis whatsoever for the idea that gun control
"makes it easier for criminals to obtain weapons."

Yeah, I did:

Mikey,

Thanks for letting me know the mental level of the opposition. This is gonna be easier than I thought.

I wrote back:

And, as I expected, you didn't answer my question.

Typical.

Mikey

As counterpoint

There was a very interesting front page story in the NYT, last weekend. In NY, gun violence is declining; in at least half of all killings the perp and victim know each other.
Local news here (RI) just had an item on cause of 80,000 serious injuries to juveniles each year...
Lawnmowers.

Nashmack:

You need to school this guy on the facts.

Here is the link to the DOJ stats on overall homicide rates by state for 2004 (the most current year with detailed stats):

http://bjsdata.ojp.usdoj.gov/dataonline/Search/Crime/State/RunCrimeOneYearofData.cfm

(after clicking on the link, hit the "Get Table" button on the lower left to generate the table)

NY murder rate = 4.6/100k
WY murder rate = 2.2/100k

I can't email until I get home tonight, but if you have a pipeline open, you need to send something through it!

Edited to add:
Here is the NY Times article that svtruth may be talking about. I highlight the relevant point:

New York Killers, and Those Killed, by Numbers

By JO CRAVEN McGINTY
Published: April 28, 2006

. . .
At the end of each year, the New York Police Department reports the number of killings — there were 540 in 2005. Typically, much is made of how the number has fallen in recent years — to totals not seen since the early 1960's. But beyond summarizing the overarching trends, the police spend little time compiling the individual details.

The New York Times obtained the basic records for every murder in the city over the last three years, and while the events make for disturbing reading, the numbers can hint at trends, occasionally solve a mystery and in at least some straightforward way answer for the city the questions of who kills and who is killed in the five boroughs.

From 2003 through 2005, 1,662 murders were committed in New York. No information, beyond an occasional physical description, is available on the killers in the unsolved cases.
. . .

The offender and victim were of the same race in more than three-quarters of the killings. And according to Mr. Farrell, they often had something else in common: More than 90 percent of the killers had criminal records; and of those who wound up killed, more than half had them.

"If the average New Yorker is concerned about being murdered in a random crime, the odds of that happening are really remote," Mr. Farrell said. "If you are living apart from a life of crime, your risk is negligible."

There is also a nifty interactive map showing that (surprise!) most murders are in the poor areas of Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, while there are redicuously few murders on the glittering island of Manhatten where Bloomberg and most other anti-2d Amendment bigots live.

Gun control will not disarm criminals, only the law-abiding - is that too hard to understand?

Don't forget to write Bloomberg. After all, he's the one who wants to restrict your access to legal guns.

He doesn't seem to realize how easy it would be to cut down a 'sporting' 12 gauge if pistols can't be found. And how easy it would be to bring in AK-47's with the tons of cocaine smuggled into the country.

The jackass who wrote the story is only repeating and spreading the Mayor's crap.

My e-mail to the author titled "Thank You Mr. Fossella"

Dear Mr, Fossella, I support and appreciate you loyalty to the American people and their ability to defend their lives, homes and nation with ARMS. And If 1.2% of gun dealers are involved in something shortsighted regarding illegal guns, the other 98.8% sound pretty damned good to me.

It was during the 1970's that the city of New York acted to require gun owners to register their guns. This was to know who had them. Public safety was the motivation behind this. Yet street crime survived.

The next gun control measure came in the 80's with a permit system that expires every three years. Which is an infringement in that my freedom does not expire when my permit does. This amounts to extortion but again, this was meant again to somehow protect society. Yet I knew as I continued to manage these insulting hurdles that all I had to do was put word on the street like the ripple of a dropped pebble on a pond that if I wanted a fully automatic machine gun, that I could have it......... GUN CONTROL AGAINST THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT IS A MYTH.

With terrorism, natural disasters, political corruption, the United Nations and good old street crime working 24/7 to kill us all, the mayors lie that national gun-ownership is down is laughable. We are 80 million strong and growing from every walk of life.

Speak to the victims of gun crimes in NYC and many will tell you that they were first victimized by a city government that would rather see them dead in the street than have a gun to deter crime and save their life. The phone calls should be flooding city hall for both denying this fundamental right and for perpetuating the lie that crime is low in NYC. What city does the mayor live in? Most people I know think differently, but then again the mayors mansion is protected round the clock with armed guards.

I only wish that other men of color such as NY Daily news writer ERROL LOUIS would stop to think about what it means to be a free individual and the collective responsibility we have to remain free. The right to ARMS (If the victims of WACO had .50-caliber rifles and a few RPG'S it may have bought those men, women and children some precious time).

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms Mr. Louis is not about hunting. It is about the American people retaining the ability to wage war if necessary. For the sake of being intellectually honest, lets start there. And if it is that you just fear guns, read this article and get a grip.

article - http://www.jewishworldreview.com/julia/gorin030802.asp

As of today, the only people in NYC who are exercising gun rights in its original historical intention are the criminals. Because they walk free. Unhindered by the infringements placed on our rights. The rest of us live with a mounting fear that because of gun control we may have to join them one-day in order to save the constitution. Leaving us in the company of our founding fathers who became criminals in the eyes of the crown when declaring independence.

Keep up the good work Mr. Fossella.
