New York hunters

I went out hunting yesterday morning.
Got a bit of a late start arriving after first light. I was in stand by 8, the wind kept shifting but mostly in my face. About 9:30 a spike buck came up on my rear and snorted at about 30 yds. I turned around, brought up my rifle I figured he was last year's deer. He obviously saw my movements but stood there. I didn't have a great angle, then he moved and I had a better angle but a ton of brush to shoot through, thought I'd give him a pass but inserted my plugs anyway. Well he hung around in the brush ocasionally seeing a tail flick. I watched him and figured he'd circle into an old logging road. He did right where I predicted he would presenting a perfect broadside shot. There were a few small trees and brush in the raid but mostly a clear shot.

I hit him a little high behind the shoulder in the ribcage. A double lung hit at 80 yds. he ran at the shot, first fromy left to right, where he crashed then almost 180 degree turn where he crashed again trying to jump a downed tree, but didn't make it. Then directly tears a revine creek bottom. My first tracking job in a few years. I found the spot where I shot him and it looked to me like arterial splatter, there was blood everywhere. Stevie Wonder could have followed that trail. He went about 50 yds. IMG_20191127_060317.jpg

Rifle used was rem 700 sps in 7mm08 140 gr nosler ballistic tips over 46.5 gr imr 4350.

I'll ask him, it runs good. He just used it for the garden and some snow plowing. The big tiller will do the garden now so he really does not need it. Once again wings sound good, have to wait for next year lol.

Like to thank pat and your brother for driving down and going hunting. We did not see any but I had a good time. Same with Brent thanks for coming down to.

hope we can do more next year.

I'd like that alot. The place I shot my spike is an old logging road. From the asphalt there is a slight up hill maybe 30 yds to the top, then it's downhill. From the street to the top of hill there is 4 well traveled deer paths. It's been the same for many years. An easy walk. I usually travel down the hill near ravine with creek flowing in the bottom.

Easy walk in and logging road sound nice. The spot we sat today was ok but deer just were not moving.

Same up my way, wind kept them tucked away. Pushed the swamp a bit and didn't see a thing. Not sure if I'm going out in the AM, but am Sunday for sure. 3-5 inches of snow coming in the afternoonish so that should get their butts moving in the morning hours.

Bert I have to go to.my daughters place for diner later today. I was thinking of trying out thier property on Kabanick Road, town of Binghamton orr of Park Ave. Would you want to go there about one or so.

I had a couple of does come out of the thick stuff at the same stand where I shot that small spike but they came out at a different spot then then buck.
I seen the one doe and when the rifle brushed against my heavy coat she spooked and ran a little bit behind some thick stuff. I never seen the second deer, i was trying yo get an opening to shoot the first deer. It was just to thick for a shot so I put my rifle down and looked where she came from and there was a bigger doe standing there broad side. When I picked up my rifle again this other deer heard the gun contact my coat, she snorted and ran back to where she came out if.

I went to my daughters house for dinner this afternoon and shot a doe a little before the end of shooting time. One of last years vintage. I waited about twenty minutes before going to it incase the other deer that were with it came back to see what happened.

I dressed it off and hung it up in the air with a good size excavator they had there my SIL is working on.
I will be spliting it with my kids, they want to get some deer sticks (slim jim's) and summer sausage made up. I will put some into deer jerky.

We still have a bunch of doe tags left. There is a good size snow comeing in so they will be changing their patterns some.

Nice, that jerky you made was good. We have not made summer sausage in years. Now your brother needs to catch up.

I'm happy you enjoyed that pack of jerky.
I'd like to get another deer and process most of it into jerky, my brother bought a dehydrator last deer season and i bought another last week. I have to get it going because I fly back to Seattle next Friday.
He has everything bought to get it started, we pluged in the big freezer today. Now it's just getting another deer or two.

I'd like one of those big commercial dehydrators but there pricey. I should get a smoker for down here. That one dad has works good. It was so good I had to put it in the fridge to keep from eating it all lol.
