New York hunters

Not many of my friends hunt, the one that does is working the weekend. My dad might if he can get out. I am waiting for a rifle to be dropped off at a ffl hope it gets here this week but maybe Tuesday or Wednesday. So I don't think I will be up till then, dad is going to pick me up. I still have not got my license, still broke and should need 25-50 for the rifle transfer. I my go today and we'll a shotgun for a few bucks.

My leg is getting better but still swelled up some, should be fine for hunting if I wrap it up.
I have a camera I believe it has a time stamp when taking the photo so that's one way.

I have an extra rifle here if you need one to use, it is a Browning 30/06 BAR semi auto... I will be useing my brothers Remington model 7 in 243.

Thr road my brother lives on had several does out crossing on the way here last night from the airport. They were all nice size except one which was a yearling.
We have to head out and sight in the 243, pick up new trail cam SD cards and a few other things. I'd like to go pop a few squirrels for diner if we have the extra time.

Hey fellas, I'm up around Albany. Hunt in Stephentown NY. We lost out 1200 acre lease this past year ,but have permission to hunt 34 acres boarding it along with another 1000 acre plot in Grafton. So this year will kind of stink. But here is light on the horizon. Warning it's a little bit of a story:

The property we leased for the past 4 years with our hunting club is being bought by the state from a company called Landvest. The property will become a wildlife management area once it is state owned. However the sale is still in the works, so it's owned by Landvest and isn't availible to the public untill it becomes state property. Just down the road there is a 2000 acre plot that Landvest also owns. It boarders the capital district WMA, that piece will be going to the state at the same time they buy up our previous lease property. This Nearly doublies ithe size size of the capital district WMA, making for an almost 5000 acre spot that's availible to the public to hunt. So looking forward to it.

Best part (for our family atleast) is a few hundred acres that we grew up hunting, will now be availible to hunt again! Our family hunted this particular spot for nearly 20 years. It was located directly across from our house and the back side of it boarded the capital district WMA. So through his plot we were able to hunt an absurd amount of land. Unfortunately the property was sold to Landvest a few years back (yes the very same company the club we joined leased 1200 acre plot from). Understandandably Landvest gave us the boot from our hunting grounds when they bought the price up . At that point we joined a hunting club in Stephentown and have been with them ever since. Now that Landvest selling all it's property to the state in this area, hopefully in the next year or so things will have come full circle. We will once again be able to hunt the land we cut our teeth on. Very excited for this!

Mid road don't write the season off before it starts. The best buck I've ever taken was on property that I'd never hunted before. I was with a friend who was circling the hill I on top of, the buck was chasing a doe walked right to me. Take it slow look for signs and plan your movements. You should do alright.

That's good news about the state buying all of that land. I might have to come up and check it out when the deal's done. It would take alot of hunters to cover all of that territory.

I'm looking forward to just getting in the woods honestly. My brother did a quick walk around that 1000 acre ploy in Grafton and said it looked pretty nice. My only thing is idk who is in there hunting already. I get it's open to the public, but I'd hate to come through and ruin another guy's hunt who has been going there for years.

I do wish we took more time to scout this year. Years previous we took multiple trips up to the property we hunted to hang cameras ,check things out and clear paths to our stands for quite walks. This year has been crazy busy. Been working 6 days a week since april and had a little girl (my first) three weeks ago, so time has been scarce.

I am hunting state land the first time this year, about 1500 acres. I believe it's first come first served, I don't want to be walking up on people tho. The way it's looking I may not get out until lunch if I can, I still have to get my license.

Here's a shot of the properties I talked about from then onXhunt map, kinda makes it easier to see the situation. The elevation is wrong , our house was at 1500 ft, the peak of the property we hunted was 1700 IIRC.

Light blue area- capital district WMA
Darker blue area- cherry plains state park
Red X - our old house we grew up in
Yellow X - property we used to hunt/access WMA through( also being added to WMA)
Orange X - property being sold to the state to be added to WMA
Green X - the property we were leasing with the club, also being added as a WMa

Congrats on fatherhood. I enjoyed parenthood now I'm a grandfather and love g that too.

My old man got a little spike at about 7, thought it was a doe, the antlers sloped back and we're hidden by the ears. We don't usually do "if it's brown it's down", but all our freezers are void of venison so he took the little guy. About 100-110lbs guessing.

Saw a huge set of bear trucks crossing the logging road about 100 yards from where the old man sat, said they went right in front of his spot. I'm thinking it's the big guy that walked under my stand 4 years ago during bow season. Huge chocolate colored black bear. Maybe we will cross paths this season, still on the fence about taking a bear.

Got the deer skinned and hanging in the garage. Heading out to check out the Grafton location with my brother shortly.

Many years ago I hunted a couple of times on a friend's land on Taconic Lake Rd., not sure if it was Grafton or Petersburgh.

Unfortunately, unsuccessfully. Nice area, but very cold. Night skiing in the area, sub zero temps were common. One time up there it went almost 30 below.

Yea its tough hunting in this area. Lots of ups and downs making the wind swirl ALOT. Pick out a spot or start to stalk with wind in your favor and 10 minutes later it's going the opposite direct, then another 10 min later it's going the other way. And lots of the area is really thick stuff to boot.
