Nikon Coyote Special with the .204 Ruger

Just bought a Savage Model 10 Predator today in .204 Ruger. Now I'm looking to buy a good scope for it. I love the Nikon Coyote Special 14.5 with the BDC. I've read about a lot of people putting these scopes on their .204's but I have just one question, Nikon made the BDC recticle for the 55 gr. .223 and .22-250. How much is this going to effect the accuracy of a .204 shooting a smaller bullet?

It wont affect the accuracy of the bullet, But if that load shoots alot flatter it won't drop in the same way so the BDC will take some range time to figure out, but, are you talking about the Predator BDC or the Standard BDC?
because the Standard was based off an average of regular rounds from .223 to .300wm from what I have heard.
Although It would make sense for the predator to be calibrated for the varmint rounds.
 
yes the coyote special works well on the 204. my uncle shoots that exact setup. he loves it, JD is corect you need to go to the range and figure out where it is precisely. there are only three rings on that BDC I don't think you will need the first one till around the 250/275 yard mark. good luck.
 
Yes, this will be the predator BDC. Just trying to figure out if the scope is still worth it. So far I think that it is because I don't see there being more than 2" difference at 300 yards.
 
As ebbs said.

Calibrating the scope is essential for any rounds particularly when shooting at small targets.
 
When calibrating my reticles i like to do both windage as well as elevation. Nikon's BDC reticles aren't bad for these apps. really. My 22-250 Sav. Striker 60 gr. JLK Low Drag load is fairly close to the subtensions as set up at optics highest power in the 2.5-8x Encore pistol scope. Here's the rig and my reticle zeroing system--

The 1st shot at a game animal using this system resulted in a hit on a 375-yd. mange coyote, with only 1/2 the animal in sight and maybe a 5 second shot opportunity. I lasered the dog, flipped the rig up on the Harris bipod referenced the reticle hold in the Butler Creek scope cap cover and nailed the dog. The point being the systems will work when calcd. and tested no matter whether the reticle matches perfectly or not.

One of these days though i'm gonna check to see if the lower post tip in that reticle matches the 750-yd. zero the ballistics profile says it oughtta' be at 15 SMOA compensation just for kicks.

A lot of guys think that the reticle is too thick for accurate shooting. I think they get this impression since most of the advertised diagrams don't give u an accurate scale of the true line thickness (subtension). Most of the BDC lines are only .25 SMOA thick--not nearly as thick as it looks from the diagrams.

Agreed. The site picture is a lot less cluttered than you would think.
