Went up in the mountains yesterday and shot the new (to me) Uberti 1862 Police in .36 caliber. I found out VERY quickly that the nipples are way too big and blow back cap parts into the hammer channel leading to no ignition when the hammer fails to hit the next cap.

I want to put Treso nipples on but I need to know what thread size etc. is on these little guns.

Input would be appreciated.

That's a very good question.

I have two, one made in 1972 that has 6x0.75 thread nipples; Treso p/n 11-50-10 (Track of the Wolf catalog number PIR-A) might fit. The ones I have are actually too long, but they could be shortened to fit if necessary.

The other one, made in 1997, has a very strange thread. It measures 0.206x28, which conforms to no standard I can think of. I have no replacements for that gun. I've tried regular 12x28 threaded nipples (they have an MD of 0.216") but they will not start in the nipple holes.

Good luck.

I find it hard to believe but was told Ruger OLd army nipples would fit my 1862 Uberti. It just sounds so wrong.

I have the same problem, and it is aggravating as can be. I was told about inserting a very thin brass disc over the arbor and between the cylinder and the frame. Something thin enough to flex and let the hammer still push the disc against the cap and nipple, but it prevents the car fragments from falling into the action. There is another fix some have tried but it involves drilling a hole for a pin in the frame channel

It would be very difficult for me to believe an ROA nipple would fit a Uberti 1862 Colt Pocket Police cylinder.

ROA nipple threads are 12x28, which is 0.216" MD and 28 threads/inch. If the M6x0.75 metric thread size is correct for the Pocket Police, the decimal equivalents for that thread are 0.236" MD and 33.9 threads/inch. Not even close. The metric equivalent for the SAE 12x28 is M5.5x0.9, which is sometimes used in lieu of 12x28, although it's not a metric standard thread.

The nipple size for the colt pocket models is 5.5X.9. Track of the wolf has them.

I think that I'll be calling TOTW tomorrow and asking a few questions. The part number for the size listed above states for ".31 Remington Pocket" but at least it's a starting point.

Looking into the nipple with a flashlight the flash hole seems to be about the same size as the factory nipples on my ASM Dragoon, but the Dragoon loaded with 45gr 3f doesn't blast the caps back under the hammer where the little Police does 4 out of 5 times and it's aggravating as hell. I will say though that the cap end of the nipple is big enough to stuff a medium sized cat into.

The other problem that I have with this new addition is that #11 caps fall off before I get the cylinder back on the gun (haven't figured out how to cap the thing on the gun yet, fat fingers don't work, snail capper don't work and inline capper same thing) so I am using #10's which don't fall off but also don't go on quite far enough to ensure ignition on the first strike.

Since I'm capping off the frame, I'm hesitant to get too carried away pushing caps on because I like all my fingers right where they are so I think new Ampco/Treso nipples are in order. I had the same problem on a Walker regarding nipple seating and the fix was in bronze nipples. Although the Walker didn't blow cap parts into the gun.

The nipple size for the colt pocket models is 5.5X.9.
There are exceptions to that. As I stated above, my 1972-manufactured Uberti 1862 Pocket Police uses M6x0.75 threaded nipples, and neither 12x28 nor '5.5x0.9' will fit into my 1997-manufactured Uberti 1862 Pocket Police.

Mykeal. I was going by what TOTW had listed. What size does your 97 vintage 1862 take?

Never mind I just reread your previous post. Got to checking and there is a thread like that although it's not a standard. Chart lists it as 5.3X0.9 wierd that they would use that. Trust the Italians to make life difficult. Could probably turn .010 off a 5.5X0.9 without loosing any integrity and get it to work.

Foto Joe, This cap fragment blow-back problem has been addressed a few times and here's the easiest fix I can think of. My pocket police had the same problem and as mentioned in an earlier post, a pin in the frame is a practical and easy fix.

I did remember to look at the proof stamp last nite and this one was manufactured in 2003. Hopefully the 5.5x.9 nipples will work. She's a beautiful little gun so I'd like to make her work the way she was intended.

This nipple manufacturer offers free advice through his 800 phone number and just might be able to provide nipples with the correct fit on both ends. :)
