Four dead after Sydney stabbing
A 30-year-old man has allegedly killed his two children and his father-in-law before being shot by police at a property at Wilberforce, north-west of Sydney.

The mother of the four-year-old girl and the 20-month-old boy rang police this morning to report she had been sexually assaulted by her estranged husband last night.

Officers from Windsor police picked her up this morning and took her to hospital, but did not take a formal statement.

Police were returning the 31-year-old woman to her home at Burdekin Road at about 1:00pm AEST, when they noticed her 72-year-old father lying in the driveway bleeding.

Detectives say they then saw the 30-year-old man attacking one of the children.

The man was shot twice by police, who then noticed the children were dead with stab wounds.

The man was taken to Windsor hospital but died of self-inflicted stab wounds and the gunshot injuries.

Investigations are continuing into the murders and the alleged assault of the woman.

Assistant Commissioner Bob Waites says the police operation will also be examined.

"We've got the homicide unit on the scene, we've got forensic services here, we've got internal affairs oversighting it, we actually have the deputy coroner here as well," he said.

"The full investigation is in progress and they'll go through all the detail. There'll be a coronial inquest result from that."

Without wishing to appear callous over what is a tragedy, can you imagine the squeals if the murderer had used a gun? To the anti-brigade, somehow, when a gun is used, the victims are more dead.

What a shame she hadn't been able to "remove" the threat the night before ....

At close range a knife can be just as deadly as a gun. Evil people will always find ways of wreaking havoc. You cannot declaw the vast majority of good, decent people because of the actions of a criminal minority.

Sad

And I suppose the press will make little of it since no evil gun involved.

Course they might pick on the coppers for usin guns on the poor deceased.

Not too long ago, a man in Sacramento, Ca. used a knife to kill his pregnant wife, his children, and a couple of other young relatives (niece and nephew, I think). He murdered a total of six people, plus his unborn child (I think that counts, but the reported total didn't include the unborn child). First reports on TV had a picture of a gun in the upper corner of the screen, implying it had been a mass shooting. Newspaper reports didn't mention the murder weapon until several paragraphs into the story. Now, if the man had used a gun, the headlines would have been screaming about a SHOOTING. However, we didn't hear much about the murder weapon. Pretty disgusting.

Since I live in a county where I cannot get a CCW without contributing heavily to the sheriff's reelction campaign (corruption? Why would anyone think that?), I carry a Kershaw folding knife.

Speaking of double standards, does anybody remember that policeman who went berzerk in New Jersey a couple years ago and killed 5 people with his department issued MP5? If that had been one of the "cold dead fingers" NRA types there would have been all manner of hell to pay. His victims were less dead!

Edited to add: this is not meant to denigrate law enforcement persons in general, who are often over scrutinized by the media.

Bruce I'll see your knives and raise you some baseball bats.

Also in Sydney last night two asian men in their 20's were beaten to death with baseball bats in a home about 3 minutes away from where I live.

I did the same thing when I lived in the People's Republic of California. I still carry a knife, but it's a pocket knife rather than a useful self-defense weapon. I've carried one knife or another since I was seven years old. Better a knife than nothing, but...

Be glad you're not in Australia......

Standing Wolf.

In most if not all states of Australia, the police may stop you without a warrant if they suspect you are carrying "an offensive weapon"
(a pocket knife will do:scrutiny: ).

In the eyes of the folks who run the land of Oz, no law-abiding citizen 'needs' (and therefore cannot 'justify') to carry any knife around.
You might escape the wrath of the law if you had a string of freshly-gutted fish over your shoulder:D

See My Post on the Thread;

"Anti- weapon frenzy strikes Australia". I'll repeat here, in short, what I said there.

If you outlaw weapons, can you also outlaw everyone who is bigger, younger, quicker, stronger, and nastier than I am?

I trained in Swat tactics with a federal police officer from Australia. He covered an area the size of New England by himself.

He told me he can stop ANY car and ask to look in the trunk. If you did not wish to comply, he took the keys and opened it himself. If you resisted that attempt, you got dragged out and whatever else, then he searched the trunk.

He did not need a warrant, probable cause, or anything like a suspicion of anything to do so. He stated " you have no rights in Auastralia". Keep in mind, the federal police part, he wasn't a local so they may have more powers than others in LE in that country, not sure.

Can't comment for the other states, but here in Western Australia your car is NOT regarded in the same light as your home; i.e. the police can stop and search your vehicle. In fact, there have been cases of police setting up roadblocks and stopping and searching all vehicles for "drugs or guns".

Police do not necessarily need a warrant to forcibly enter a home here either, if they suspect a firearms violation.
