Some years ago I had a KelTec in 40 S&W. Had it blow up in my hands out at the range. Buddy of mine has one and I don't think he has fired it since mine blew up. I checked out the KelTec website and saw no sign of a 40. Just read a post where someone commented on KelTec coming out with a .45 What happened to the forty?

I used to have one. It was built on the same frame as the 9mm. It had technical problems with it as well.

Apparently, they had a lot of problems out of them.

Too many problems with the gun. Most of it was blamed on limp wristing, but it was more than likely just the gun.

I had one for a short time and mine worked, but I just cannot stand low quality firearms so it got sold.

Kel-Tec had one, called the P-40. They also had some conversion kits for the P-11, which basically called for using the existing P-11 Mags, and then putting a new slide and barrel on the existing frame. These didn't do so well, the magazines constantly jammed. The first pistol I mentioned, the P-40, was an updated design that actually used magazines that could handle the .40 S&W cartridge.

I owned one, it was given to me because the previous owner didn't really care for it that much. I maybe shot 200 rounds total through it before I sold it. Recoil was harsh, feeding from the mags was erratic (I don't "limpwrist"), and I had jams from every 4th round in the magazines. This was going to be my carry handgun, but it wasn't reliable enough for target practice, let alone carrying. The final straw was when my right hand was numb from firing 4 magazines through it and the webbing in my hand was bruised (how the hell does one do that?). I finally saw why it had been given to me.

I think Kel-Tec was onto something with the P-40, but had problems executing it (like they tend to have with some of their new guns). However, there are some rabid P-40 fans out there who swear that everything is operator error. I think it's just too powerful a cartridge in too light a handgun. If your buddy is looking to sell it, toss it up on the Kel-Tec Owners Group www.ktog.org, these guys are the ones who know how to fix Kel-Tec issues and have a solid appreciation and rabid fascination with the Kel-Tec Product line. He should get a good price and he will know it will be going to a good home. Or, he can contact Kel-Tec and get a .357 Sig barrel for his P-40. It uses the same mags and slides I believe.

Good Luck.

When the P-11 first came out I bought one, still have it.
I bought the 40S&W conversion.
With some bullet shapes I had a problem of the bullet randomly hitting the slide catch and locking the slide back.
I tried bending the slide catch and broke it. That stopped the problem but now the slide doesn't lock back on an empty magazine. Since now the gun is reliable I can live with the slide not locking back.

I called Kel Tec and told them the problem and said since I broke the slide catch I'd like to buy a new one (just to have it on hand).
Kel Tec sent a new slide catch, no charge.

I was surprised to hear that owners were having trouble with the 40S&W in the original 9mm magazines because mine function fine from day one.

I seldom shoot the 40 anymore. It's just too uncomfortable to shoot.

If I carried the P-11 I'd probably carry it as a 40S&W.

Buddy of mine has one and I don't think he has fired it since mine blew up.
Grandpa Shooter, I’ll go $200 if he wants to unload that Kel-Tec P-40 :)

PS, I’ll go $75 for yours, if you still all those blown up pieces.
