I've been looking for a Kel-Tec Sub2K for a bit now with no avail... actually I found one for $800. That is plain old rape for a used $300 plastic gun.

So, I am thinking about a Hi-Point carbine in 9mm. I mainly want it for my wife and mom to shoot. They are too advanced to only shoot .22's, but the AK's are too heavy and recoil-laden for them. So, I want a decent 9mm rifle. The thing is that I am concerned that the Hi-Point is not really defense worthy. Anything that cheap makes me raise my eyebrows. The gun will mostly be used for plinking, but I want to be comfortable with it if they ever need to use it for self defense.

I guess the other option is to drop lots more $$$ and get a CX4 or an Uzi, but my wallet hurts bad enough just from ammo prices. I would like to avoid dropping $1000+ on another gun right now.

So, those of you that own a Hi-Point, how do you feel about it as a defensive weapon?

Other recommendations? Needs to be 9mm though... can't get into another caliber.

Thanks. KB

The Hi Point Carbines have been discussed to death around here just do a search to see what I mean (there have been 2 long threads just in the past week).

The consensus is if you can get them at the normal price ($175) or less they are a good, reliable fairly accurate carbine with an exceptional warranty. I own a couple and agree with this. The people who say negative things about them either never owned one or expect way too much from a sub $175 pistol caliber carbine.

On 9mm for self defense my take is why not, especially talking women or children users. The beretta cx4 is obviously a better firearm all around but besides a hi cap magazine and converting to left hand shooting there is nothing the CX4 does that the 995 cannot do. It is just as reliable and accurate as the beretta at 30% the price plus it has a better warranty I would wager.

Very reliable. Very usable. Just don't get the promag hi-cap mags for the Hpoint carbine.

I have one and love it.

I am looking for a sub2000 though in beretta magwell so that I can take advantage of my hi-cap mags that I have for the beretta.

That was the main reason I wanted a Sub2K... I have tons of Glock mags already. Sadly, I missed out on buying one when they were available.
