Non-resident Student residing in Florida

Doc7, a NJFID has nothing to do with handgun ownership in NJ other than the ability to purchase handgun ammo or long guns. It is a purchaser's card not a permit to own. There is no NJ law prohibiting someone moving into NJ with bringing any NJ legal firearms with you. You can keep them in your house, place of business if you're the owner, to the range, gunshop and very few other places. The NJFID allows some flexibility with where you possess long guns.

See my post #3. I never suggested he come back to his parents house and leave his handgun in his car. If the OP becomes a FL resident there are extremely few conditions he can bring a handgun I to NJ. If you are thinking about the Brian Aitken case not having a FID had nothing to do with what happened to him. Aitken is far from the 2A poster child some have made him. He's more like an example of how to be stupid and get locked up.

I have lived in NJ most of my life and spent over 30 years as a LEO and near 50 years as a shooter so I'm not talking about something I'm not well versed on.

There is a lot of talk about unnecessary stuff in this thread. This is directly addressed in an ATF FAQ. A college student is allowed to buy guns as a resident in their home state while at home and as a resident in their school state while at school. See this ruling from the atf https://www.atf.gov/files/regulations-rulings/rulings/atf-rulings/atf-ruling-80-21.pdf with that ruling, and proof of enrollment you should be good to go.

I'm not a sworn LE officer or lawyer but I don't think you can have(possess) 2 or more state IDs at one time.
Some states ask for your old identification(driver or non-driver) or tell you it must be destroyed/no longer valid.

I wouldn't think you could get a valid DL in one state then get a valid non-driver/state ID card in another.

There is an interesting thread along these lines of this subject on the NJ Gun Forums

The OP is a dual resident of FL and NJ. He has a Florida Drivers License and a New Jersey BOAT License.

in florida, you are required to get a fla d/l within 30 days of setting up residency, hence the valid in florida only d/l. this was made for snowbirds who split the year between states.gives a residency address in case of accident.they will also ask for an emergency contact number.

NOKR.org .....

Several Florida LE & Homeland Security agencies use the www.NOKR.org too.

I'd add that if you choose to get a new Florida DL make sure you have all your documents. Florida has a special website for new IDs; www.gathergoget.com .
After 9-11-2001, Florida made it a real pain to get a valid DL.

Student,

Florida is a nice place, I'd recommend becoming a resident. You can make an appointment at the DMV and they will switch your license and registration over with little fuss. While it probably does not make much of a difference for you as a student, you will come to appreciate Florida's lack of a state income tax once you graduate.

Yes you CAN have a DL in one state and a state issued ID in another state. I have had this for seven years now.

Having said that, this is true for Texas DL and New Mexico ID in my case. YMMV.

And to the OP: Look at your thread title: Non-resident Student residing in Florida. I think you have your answer right there. Surprised no one else commented on this.
