Not good news for 3D printing enthusiasts

To clarify, because it took me a few minutes to figure it out, when the article says:
McGinnis was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. . .

What it should say is "unregistered SBR". Apparently he had a <16" bbl, and a stock.

Technically if he is a prohibited person would he not also simple be guilty of possessing a firearm? Just because one rolls their own so to speak whether out of plastic or with a full on CAD/CAM setup if you are a federally prohibited person are you not still breaking the law through possession / access to a firearm?

The SBR thing might let them ratchet charges up I guess

Of course he would be guilty of simple possession. But mark my words, the antis are going to use the 3D printing aspect.

The antis' are already blowing up the 3D printing to scare everyone. They make it out to be a big deal, more than the multitude of other things people could 3D print. "oh 3D printed guns, SOO scary , we need to do something about this"
How about all the drug culture that's infested on the streets? Or all the people who are unemployed because they lack an education? There's plenty more things out there to worry about than something that was bound to happen anyway when 3D printing became a technology.

Sigh...I always want more details. According to these stories, this guy fired THREE shots in a wooded area around Dallas; so I'm to conclude he fired three shots and somebody heard them and investigated enough to determine he was a prohibited person? What's the real story? Who tipped off the authorities?

At the time, he was under a court order prohibiting him from possessing any firearms, which was put into place after a violent altercation with his girlfriend, the New York Times reports.

So a person not allowed to own firearms broke the law to get firearms? Shocking.

3d printed guns are the big scary thing now. But for less than the price of a car you can get the equipment to turn a block of steel into a very high quality gun that will last for a very long time. People have been making guns for 500 years. For most of that time it was done without the help of electricity.
