Observations about my XD-40

From walking around the house with the weapon cocked, but empty.

You may recall I expressed concern because of the lack of a thumb safety on the XD

I know believe that this was simply gun phobia, something that's a throwback from my anti-gun parents. It's something I constantly have to fight off, and it's getting easier.

Not a single *click* at all. I guess I was wrong about the safety.


So, anyways, to those who thought I was a paranoid guy, you were right. Maybe when i get my CCW i'll carry it Although I still want a 1911, and I may still use the thumb safety as the means of justification to the girlfriend

Typically I find this true of most modern guns... they generally only fire when the operator actually pulls the trigger.

Just an observation.

I have two XD's; a 357sig service model, and a sub compact 9mm. I have carried them everyway i could think of, slept with them, tossed them around, etc. all with an empty chamber, but cocked striker. After a month of doing this, I have never picked them up to find the striker released. These things are extremely safe; well at least as safe as possible. (There is no control over the safety of the operator). There is the grip safety; it must be firmly in your hand to fire. There is the trigger safety; the trigger safety must be depressed, with the gun seated firmly in your hand to fire. There is also a striker safety; the gun must be seated in your hand, trigger must be pulled to release trigger safety, and trigger must be pulled fully to the rear to release striker safety. You really got to screw up to have an "accidental" discharge with this one. Just as an aside, I have several times found my cocked and locked 1911 in the off safe condition. It is a hell of a lot easier to knock the safety off of a 1911 than to "grip, pull trigger, pull trigger all the way to the rear" on the XD. Of course, even if the safety is accidentally knocked off on the 1911; you still have the grip safety, and firing pin safety on the series 80's. You may indeed be worrying too much; although that is not necessarily a bad thing. It's those who don't worry that "worry" me.

Wait a minute....are you guys saying that a gun just doesn't go off by itself?????Someone tell the media and the public at large.......Wait,you can't mean those evil black guns........just shiney ones right?????
A while back I did my own Glock drop test(by mistake) and low and behold it didn't go off and kill everyone in the room....go figure....triggers have to be pulled these days to make a gun go bang........

Whewwww, just imagine if she's your wife if she's insisting things like that now.

If shes insisting you buy hers, before you go buy a second gun, I think you may have a keeper here. A older friend of mine gave a great piece of advice about marrying a woman. Make sure she likes going to gun shows and likes guns. Forgot about anything else, its not important. He must be doing something right, because they have each give each other ar-15's for presents, and this christmas was all about the gun accessories. No jewelry or clothes or other boring stuff .

She's great. LOL

She rejected the idea of a Ruger 22/45 because it was a "sissy gun."

She said "They're fun and all, but what if someone busts into the house?"

She's starting to post groups almost as tight as mine on the XD-40.


She's great with a rifle, and likes knives. She told me NOT to spend more than a few hundred dollars on her engagement ring because, "There's more useful and fun stuff you can spend money on. Jewelry is just jewelry."

(I ended up getting her a 1200 dollar ring anyways.)

And she told me the gift of self defense was a great gift.



I LOVE MY GIRLIE! :-D

Anyways, she likes giving gun related gifts too. I've gotten ammo, holsters, etc, and she told me she wants to buy me an SKS for valentines day. She spoiled the surprise because she wanted to make sure she got a "good" one.

Also, I agree on the "Make sure she likes guns" thing... 1st, it would cause problems later if she was an anti.

Second, not being afraid of guns, and recognizing the right to self defense, really says a lot about a person. It's kind of litmus paper to determine if a person has common sense or not.

Sounds like a good girl. Unfortunatly, a hell of a lot of humanity fail to turn the litmus paper any color at all. Keep her, and enjoy the XD. ( and her too!)
