I was working on draw - get off the X practice this morning when an unexpected surprise (redundant) got me thinking about something that could be implemented in training.

My area was completely secure with nobody in the house and doors locked. I was drawing and moving quite a bit, not that - one little token side step - get off the X silly practice. This particular drill was to draw, move (considerably), aim at something predetermined, finger to the trigger but no shooting or even dry fire. No ear protection today. I was moving far and quick to my left, towards cover, when I stepped on a piece of industrial quality bubble wrap that somebody else had left on the floor. Since this drill was to not shoot and without any ear protection, it was a loud surprise that did make me flinch slightly. I was proud to not jerk the trigger in any way.

I am not an instructor in any way but this really opened my eyes and got me thinking about how it could be implemented by an instructor. Double sided tape and randomly deployed heavy duty bubble wrap in a shoot house and drills where the student is not supposed to shoot could be valuable. Of course a trainer with snap caps of some sort might be better and more controllable.
