Ohio cuts bag limit for deer, adds days to hunting season (Deer-gun)

I saw this on the WLWT app, maybe this might be of interest to "deer-gun" Ohio hunters. Ohio adds two days to the deer-gun season but the take went down from 9 to 6 with only one deer can be "anterless".

"The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the Ohio Wildlife Council voted to reduce the statewide number of deer hunters can take from nine to six. Only one deer may be antlerless. White-tailed deer bag limits also were reduced in most counties and antlerless permits were removed in all but 10 counties.
The council also approved two more days of deer-gun hunting for Dec. 28-29."

That should read "only one deer can be antlered".

The article is also misleading when it talks about antlerless permits in that it implies antlerss deer can now only be taken in 18 counties, when in fact, antlerless tags are a discounted tag for taking antlerless deer instead of using an either sex tag.

The two day addition to the season is also misleading in that we have had those extra days for years, and they were dropped this year. they are simply being reinstated next year and will be on weekdays instead of a weekend, so that nobody can actually use them.

is it still shotgun only? been a long time since I hunted in ohio.

Mostly straight walled handgun cartridges, but they also included some old fashioned style rifle cartridges, i.e., heavy and slow.

Here's the list:

.357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41 Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .454 Casull, .460 Smith & Wesson, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, .475 Linebaugh, .50-70, .50-90, .50-100, .50-110 and .500 Smith & Wesson.

38 Special? Really? Doesnt that come in under a power threshold in Ohio?

This is .38 spl carbines, which usually exceed velocities from a .357 revolver.

Revolver requirements are .357 or better from a 5" minimum barrel.

Note that they added the good old 45-70 Gommint. That makes my Ruger #1 in that caliber, with a low-mounted 1x-4x scope, the perfect deer rifle in Ohio.

You'd think so. And the 10mm AUTO should be added immediately to that list. Won't be too long before someone starts making a short handy carbine chambered for it. :D
