Helping a friend identify an old S&W pistol - hope I'm in the right thread:

.38 Special
2” bbl
Square grips
6 shot - non-recessed cylinder chambers
Fixed blade front sight – notch rear sight
Serial Number S 926xxx (think S prefix denotes hammer block safety?)
4 screws on side plate
No model inside stamped with number 6 above numbers 2321
Hammer spur bobbed - well done job if not from factory ...

Any info appreciated ...

It's an early post-war .38 Military & Police (Pre-Model 10) most likely made during 1946-'47. Yes, the "S" did denote the hammer block safety. The stocks are from a much ealier M&P made during the 1920's. It should be a neat revolver that exhibits none of the later cost-cutting changes, and I would expect it to have a particularly smooth double-action trigger pull.
